Josef Hengge
Josef Hengge (also: Joseph Hengge ; born January 23, 1890 in Durach ; † March 21, 1970 in Kempten (Allgäu) ) was a German painter .
Life
Hengge originally came from the Allgäu . After an apprenticeship at a church painting company in Sontheim , he attended the municipal trade school and then the royal arts and crafts school in Munich. In 1915 he was badly wounded in Arras during the First World War . As a " privateer ", personally supported by King Ludwig III. , he then began studying drawing with Angelo Jank on May 15, 1916 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . Later he was also a student of Franz von Stuck . Hengge stayed, interrupted in 1932 by a one-year scholarship stay in Florence, until his apartment was "bombed out" in Munich in 1945. He then moved to Wertach and from 1950 back to his birthplace in Kempten, where he also died in 1970.
Act
Stylistically, he was classified as a representative of "strong realism". One critic described him as " Egger-Lienz des Allgäu".
As a young artist he had already won several prizes and was appointed to the jury for the exhibitions in Munich's Glaspalast .
Thanks to his close contacts with the Bavarian royal family, in particular with Crown Prince Rupprecht , he was commissioned to design the Schlossplatz frescoes for a war memorial in Berchtesgaden in 1929 . Hengge had created many other wall paintings ( frescoes ) on the facades of public buildings as well as inside churches, some of which, however, were destroyed during the war or “sacrificed” after the war to the changing taste of the times. He also created portraits of high-ranking military figures, including one of Ernst Udet , the “ General Aircraft Master ” during the National Socialist dictatorship , as well as of the Bavarian King Ludwig III at the beginning of his career . and his wife. Other motifs in his oil paintings were working people such as woodcutters and farmers.
