Signal stone
The Signalstein , also called Signalfels , is an approximately 12 m high rock in the Franconian Alb in the municipality of Obertrubach in the Bavarian district of Forchheim .
Geographical location
The Signalstein is located in the south of Franconian Switzerland in the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park . It stands on the Hirschbühl , a rocky plateau east of the Obertrubach district of Sorg . On or on the rock there is a trigonometric point at a height of 564.3 m .
history
In the Franconian Empire , on what was then the eastern border, the rock served as a signal point. The transmission took place with fire and smoke signals. Later the rock had the same function for the Egloffsteinschen castles Egloffstein , Leienfels and Bärnfels . The Signalstein Festival takes place in Sorg every year.
Hiking, climbing and a lookout point
The Signalstein can be reached as a hiking destination from Geschwand (Rotring) or Wolfsberg (Rotpunkt). It can be accessed in a few minutes via the car park north of Sorg. Its summit is climbed via a set of stairs. You can climb on the rock. There are six climbing routes with levels of difficulty 3 to 8 ( UIAA ). New tours are not allowed. In the vicinity of the Signalstein there is another climbing destination in the Northern Franconian Jura, the Western Wall .
The top of the rock serves as a lookout point. The surrounding castles are no longer visible from there, as the forest has become too dense; however, on the summit there is a horizontally attached plaque on which the directions of surrounding places are engraved.
The signal stone is designated as a natural monument (ND-04550).
