history

In the summer of 2005, the current president, Andrea Dablander, stood on the sidelines and watched a men's game. When an injured player was carried off the field, she jumped in for him. A few games later, she decided to start a women's team. In February 2006 the foundation stone for the first Innsbruck women's rugby team was laid.

Although rugby in Tyrol is an absolute fringe sport, it was possible to put together a team and play games by September 2006.

News and outlook

The women's teams in Austria play rugby 7 instead of 15 . This means that only 7 instead of the regular 15 players play per team. This makes the game shorter, faster and more ball intensive.

The WRCI is currently represented in the Austrian Bundesliga. With currently around 15 active players, the Women's Rugby Club Innsbruck is growing again after a two-year break from the 2011/12 season due to an acute shortage of players.

Rugby still plays a subordinate role in Tyrol's sporting events. The primary and long-term goal of the WRCI is to establish women's rugby in Tyrol and to expand the sporting scene in Tyrol / Austria to include an attractive team sport for women. Examples are countries like England, France , Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, where rugby has been a popular sport for decades.
