The Rugby Club Innsbruck is an Austrian rugby union club and a member of the ÖRV.

history

The Rugby Club Innsbruck was founded

The Rugby Club Innsbruck (RCI) was founded in 1997 by some foreigners living in Tyrol who wanted to continue playing rugby, which is very popular in their home countries. These mainly included Bernard Millen from New Zealand, the French Michael Magne and Johann Trojer from South Africa, who has now completed his training as an IRB referee and coach. A few Tyroleans quickly found themselves who enjoyed this fast and demanding team sport and so an international team was formed within a very short time, which even played successfully in Vienna, the Austrian rugby stronghold.

The gambling community

In 1999 the club separated from the sports club of the Pedagogical Academy Innsbruck to found the independent "Rugby Club Innsbruck" or "RCI". In the spring of 2000, a successful cooperation with the Bolzano Rugby association began, and in May 2000 a joint team won 3rd place at a tournament in Leoben. The first home game of the RCI followed in June and took place against Graz.

In the 2000/01 season Innsbruck played with Bolzano in the Italian regional league "Campionato Nazionale Serie C2 - Girone Lombardo" against a wide variety of experienced teams and had to pay apprenticeship accordingly. This cooperation was terminated due to bureaucratic difficulties in Italy and then the deployment in Innsbruck flattened out somewhat.

The resuscitation

In the course of the Rugby World Cup in 2003, the club was revived and coach Johann Trojer formed a core of some enthusiastic Tyroleans who are still running the club today.

RC Innsbruck has been playing in the Austrian Bundesliga since the 2004/05 season and was able to achieve the best result so far with the runner-up in the 2007/08 & 2008/09 seasons.

In the 2013/2014 season, the runner-up title was again achieved.

Men's

The men's team of the RCI currently has a squad of 70 active players, 80% of whom are from Innsbruck and the surrounding area. The rest of the squad consists of players from 7 nations. The average age is 24 years old, the youngest player is 17 and the oldest team member is 39 years old.

Ladies

The women's team, Women's Rugby Club Innsbruck , was founded in 2005 and has played in the Austrian Bundesliga since 2006. The WRCI has a squad of around 20 active players, with a share of almost 75% from Tyrol. The WRCI was runner-up in Austria in 2008 and 2011.

  • a 10 year streak of victories in the Tyrolean Cup against Rugby Bolzano Cavaliers, which means that the trophy, the marmot "Murray", remains in Innsbruck.
