The Trinity Church in Graefenberg is the parish church of the city of Graefenberg and the seat of the Protestant deanery Graefenberg . With the introduction of the Reformation in Graefenberg in 1528, the church became Protestant.

Building history

The first Graefenberg church of St. Michael stood around the present day war memorial. It was used until the Reformation - after that it fell into disrepair. Today's Catholic Church in Graefenberg has its patronage .

The Trinity Church was originally built in 1248 as a Romanesque church. The lower tower floors and the bell chamber, which is now used as a prayer room for victims of the world wars, date from this time. Originally the church was probably dedicated to Saint Simon Peter . The nave was built around 1300 in the Romanesque style.

In 1462 a new Gothic choir was built. The winged altar dates from this period and was replaced by a baroque altar in 1701. The pictures of the winged altar are now hung on the side walls of the choir room.

In 1556 new storeys were added to the tower, also used as a watchtower and later replaced the collapsed old watchtower on the Michelsberg, to which the old Michaeliskapelle was built. He has a tower watchman's apartment that was inhabited until the beginning of the 20th century. From 1699 the nave was redesigned and expanded so that the two baroque galleries and the patrician lodge shape the church today.

The many colorful stained glass windows are mostly from the early modern era and are foundations of the patrician families who ruled Graefenberg.
