Arno Hamburger
Arno Siegfried Hamburger (born on February 15, 1923 in Nuremberg ; died on September 26, 2013 ) was a German politician ( SPD ) and since 1972, with one interruption, first chairman of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde in Nuremberg (IKGN) and city councilor .
Life
Arno Hamburger grew up in the St. Leonhard district of Nuremberg . In August 1939 he was able to emigrate to Palestine via Italy as part of the Youth Aliyah . From 1941 he served in the British Army and later took part in the Nuremberg follow-up trials as an interpreter and translator (from October 1, 1946). During this time he was also heavily involved in youth work in Nuremberg and in rebuilding a democratic society.
Hamburger had been on the Nuremberg City Council for the SPD since 1972. He was a member of the council of elders and worked on several committees.
From 1976 to 1992 he was chairman of TuSpo Nuremberg . Under his chairmanship, the handball men were promoted to the handball Bundesliga three times and then immediately relegated.
Some of Hamburger's relatives were deported by the National Socialists . An aunt was abducted to the east at the age of 29. The grandparents were murdered in the Sobibor extermination camp and an uncle in the Mauthausen concentration camp . Because of his politically exposed position, Arno Hamburger was often attacked and abused by old and neo-Nazis .
In protest against the award of the Federal Cross of Merit to Felicia Langer , Hamburger gave back his Federal Cross of Merit in 2009.
The Adolf-Hamburger-Heim, a senior citizens' and nursing home in Nuremberg, is named after his father. A street in Nuremberg is named after him.
