At the meat banks denotes a place by the former meat shop on the north bank of the meat bridge in Nuremberg, southwest of the main market .

History of the meat house

Since the Middle Ages, meat has been offered separately on benches in this area. The slaughterhouse waste was disposed of in the Pegnitz . The first roof was built in 1419. This wooden structure was replaced by a sandstone building in 1570–1571. The meat house was destroyed in 1945 during World War II. The current building, which was no longer used for the meat trade, was erected on the foundation walls. The round arches on the ground floor are reminiscent of the original building. The city housed various offices in this building. In 2004 the building was modernized. The place at the meat banks is a stop on the historical mile Nuremberg .

Ox portal

In 1599 the ox portal was built as the entrance gate from the meat bridge to the stone meat house. The ox portal, which was badly damaged in 1945, was renovated and partially renewed in 1950.

The following Latin inscription can be read on the portal under the lying ox:

OMNIA HABENT ORTVS SVAQVE IN
CREMENTA SED ECCE
QVEM CERNIS NVNQVAM BOS FVIT
HIC VITVLVS

German: Everything has its origin and beginning, but see, the ox you see here has never been a calf.

The ox was "abused" on old postcards as a memorial for the Nuremberg ox-mouth salad .
