Craftsman's cottage

Craftsman's house "Am Ölberg" below the castle in Nuremberg

The craftsman's houses are one of the most important architectural monuments in Nuremberg's old town and are a stop on the Nuremberg Historic Mile . They are located along the alley Am Ölberg at the foot of Nuremberg Castle . The oldest half-timbered house in Nuremberg from 1338 is also located in this alley.

As early as the 11th century, the first Salian settlements for castle craftsmen, castle servants and traders emerged south of the castle. This was the starting point for the development of the city of Nuremberg.

The craftsman's houses were built as small, single-storey residential and workshop houses for craftsmen, sometimes with only one or two rooms. These were later increased, but their medieval core was retained. The original thatched roofs were banned early on because of the risk of fire. Only a few of these narrow two-story houses survived the bombing raids in World War II undamaged.
