In July 1994 the Friends of Nürnberger Felsengänge e. V. founded by Walter Herppich (* February 6, 1925 - March 6, 2014). From 1965 until his retirement, Herppich worked for the city administration in Nuremberg in the civil protection office. In this function he already had to do with the spacious tunnels and cellars . In addition, he spent his free time studying the development and history of the historic rock passages . Because of his interests he got the nickname, the basement louse .

In 1984 he was allowed to set up a regular management operation in part of the privately owned facility on Albrecht-Dürer-Platz in Nuremberg , in cooperation with a neighboring brewery. After the brewery changed ownership, Herppich founded a non-profit association with committed citizens in July 1994 . Herppich was the first chairman of the association for a long time. His successors were Franz Wolff and currently Ralf Arnold .

activities

The aim of the association is to research , expand knowledge and maintain the historical underground facilities in Nuremberg. His honorary tasks include making these monuments accessible to the public . The association currently has around 180 members and they are active in various departments. Around 100 members work as trained cellar guides or in the Construction & Technology department.

The members of the association lead through the historical art bunker , the historical rock passages , casemates of the bastions, the water pipe and the station bunker .

In addition to public tours through the historical underground facilities, the association has set itself the task of developing and maintaining documentation , holding lectures and exhibitions , restoring and maintaining parts of the facility in terms of monument preservation and the written publication of work and plans relating to local history Research. This is also done in close cooperation with other associations and public institutions. The tours offered will enhance the city's tourist offer accordingly. Foreign-language guests are informed by means of an audio guide .

The association also offers special tours for children and school classes . Since 1997, the association has also organized adventure tours especially for children.

The historic art bunker was prepared for access together with Altstadtfreunde Nürnberg . The first guided tour took place there on January 13, 1996. Today the art bunker is operated together with the museums of the city of Nuremberg .

In cooperation with the Bavarian Palace Administration, the casemates and the Lochwasserleitung are presented. First of all, the hole water pipeline had to be cleared of sludge for this management operation and a new connecting tunnel created as an exit to the cellars of the Altstadthof. After seven years of effort, management was also able to start there in 2002.

The association is currently trying to make the station bunker of Nuremberg Central Station , a relic from the Cold War, permanently accessible. In 2015, the city of Nuremberg initially agreed to support, but this was withdrawn in 2018 due to a lack of financial resources.

Since 2002, the association has been organizing special tours every year to commemorate the bombing and destruction of Nuremberg (January 2, 1945) in otherwise non-public air raids.

In 2002 and 2003 these initially only took place in the historical art bunker. Then in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2010, 2015, and 2019 in the Panierskeller , 2007, 2012, 2016 and 2020 in the Laufertorkeller , 2008 in the Radbrunnen- and Neutorkeller , 2009, 2013 and 2018 in the station bunker , 2011 in the raised bunker Wodanstraße , 2014 in the Waffenhof- and the Färbertorbunker and in 2017 in the Tucherkeller .

In addition, there were further special tours in 2015 and 2018 in the fruit market bunker and an additional one in the station bunker in 2009. Since 2017, the association has been organizing various lectures on local historical topics in Nuremberg in cooperation with other associations and intuitions.
