The Altstadtfreunde Nürnberg e. V. are an association that supports the preservation and restoration of the still existing historic old town houses and other architectural monuments in Nuremberg that are worth preserving .
history
The association was founded on January 25, 1950 under the name "Association of Friends of the Old Town Nuremberg". The first chairman was Hellmut Kunstmann . On October 30, 1973, Erich Mulzer was elected as the new chairman. He ran the reorganization of the club, which also included changing the club's name. After that, the old town friends grew from a small association with 135 members to their current size with around 6,000 members (status: 2002). This makes them the largest culturally active Nuremberg citizens' association. In 2004 Inge Lauterbach was elected chairwoman. Since June 2010 the chairman is Mr. Karl-Heinz Enderle.
activities
General
The association is not only committed to the preservation of monuments . Among other things, he has set himself the task of conveying the history and importance of Nuremberg's old town to the citizens and tourists of Nuremberg . This happens u. a. through the old town walks (in which over 250,000 people took part up to 2002), group tours through the old town, active participation in the Open Monument Day , monthly lecture evenings and, above all, the annual publication of Nuremberg Old Town Reports. These express the scientific attitude of friends of the old town.
The association has done a lot to preserve the old town of Nuremberg, as far as it still exists after the war damage, and to carry out the new building in a way that is appropriate to the old town. For this purpose, friends of the old town also buy old town houses - sometimes they get them through inheritance or donations - and renovate them. With the rescue of four medieval half-timbered houses on Unschlittplatz , which had already been approved for demolition, the association achieved a groundbreaking success between 1972 and 1978.
By 2002, the association had carried out 220 construction projects, including 38 timber framing exposures, the preservation of nine houses through purchase and renovation and eight more through resale. From 1973 to 2002 the Altstadtfreunde realized a total of over 15 million euros through these measures.
The influence of the association on Nuremberg's urban development was evident in the commitment of the old town friends to the design of the Augustinerhof in 1996. A design by the Nuremberg-born architect Helmut Jahn for this area in the center of the old town - in the immediate vicinity of the main market - should be, according to the city planners of Nuremberg Give the city center a modern flair that goes beyond the " Butzenscheiben " image. In the opinion of the friends of the old town, the project, known as the “sliced bratwurst”, would not have fit into the structural context of Nuremberg's old town and its roof landscape. In a referendum , the first in a large Bavarian city , on January 14, 1996, 67,284 voters voted against the new building project and only 30,637 in favor, which prevented its realization. In 2009, the association expressed its resistance to the construction of the new city library (including a postcard campaign), which was unsuccessful.
A renovated barn in the Zirkelschmiedsgasse has been used as an event location by the old town friends since 2002. From 2003 to 2010, the friends of the old town reconstructed the house at Irrerstraße 1. Archaeological excavations in this house brought new discoveries to the history of the old town of Nuremberg. In 2005 the old town friends started u. a. the renovation of three medieval craftsmen's houses from the 15th century in Kühnertsgasse , in which the " Natural History Society Nuremberg " has set up a museum. At a cost of 1.5 million euros, the old town friends renovated the historic community center at Weißgerbergasse 10 as the “Erich Mulzer House” and set up their office there. The German Foundation for Monument Protection contractually guaranteed a grant of 51,000 euros for this in July 2006, which was followed by two further grants of the same amount.
The association is currently rebuilding the Pellerhof with donations and its own funds . The extensive project is progressing rapidly; the first floor was completed in April 2011. The old town friends are also campaigning for the Neptune Fountain to be moved back to the main market .
Nuremberg old town reports
The annual Nuremberg old town reports were founded in 1976 under the then chairman Erich Mulzer as a publication of the old town friends. Based on well-founded topics, they quickly developed into a publication on the history of Nuremberg that was also valued in specialist circles . Mulzer was its editor until 2004 and was able to win well-known Nuremberg personalities and scientists, including employees of the Germanic National Museum and from the university sector, as authors for the Nuremberg Old Town reports.
In addition to the association's annual statement of accounts, the Nuremberg Old Town Reports contain documentations on important building measures in text and images as well as essays on the history, art and culture of Nuremberg with a focus on the old town and construction, including works by friends of the old town. Most of the essays deal with monuments of the city of Nuremberg or with historical events with regard to future developments.
Almost all of the essays were devoted to previously unprocessed topics: the choir stalls of St. Lorenz , the Reichskleinodienschrein , the evaluation of the copperplate engravings by Johann Adam Delsenbach as a source of cultural history, the creation of the large model of the old town, the oldest factory sign in Nuremberg or the shapes of the Nuremberg gas lanterns are some examples . The same goes for research into some of Nuremberg's special features such as the rings at the beautiful fountain , the Rauschgoldengel and the expression “Bäiderlasbou” (= parsley boy, nickname for a native of Nuremberg).
In addition, there are special features of the history of the building that were also not dealt with in the literature before: Gutzlöcher, sun mirrors, facade rings, heat openings, but also the new findings that the Kreuzgassen were built in blocks by large entrepreneurs in 1470 and that Nuremberg around 1600 still largely looked like a half-timbered town bot.
Mention should be made of the description of the discovery of the home of the naturalist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647–1717) and the description of the research she carried out there over many years. The importance of the Nuremberg city wall as a world cultural heritage (25/2000) was also commented on in the old town reports.
