Erich Mulzer (born January 13, 1929 in Nuremberg ; † October 9, 2005 ibid) was a German high school professor and long-time chairman of the old town friends of Nuremberg .

Life

After graduating from high school, Mulzer studied German , geography and history at the University of Erlangen from 1949 to 1955 . Already during his studies he dealt with the building history of the city of Nuremberg. That is why he joined the Friends of the Old Town Nuremberg Association in 1951 , which advocated the preservation and reconstruction of the Nuremberg town houses. In 1954, Mulzer's book about Nuremberg town houses was published , which was funded by the government of Middle Franconia and the Nuremberg city council. After completing his studies, Mulzer taught German, history, geography and social studies at the Gymnasium Fridericianum Erlangen as a high school teacher . In addition to his professional activity, he did his doctorate with Otto Berninger at the Erlangen Institute for Geography. In his doctoral thesis from 1971, Erich Mulzer examined "The changes in the old town in Nuremberg due to the reconstruction 1945-1970" .

In 1973 he was elected chairman of the Association of Friends of the Old Town Nuremberg and undertook the restructuring of the association (including changing the name of the association to "Altstadtfreunde Nürnberg eV" ), which then became Nuremberg's largest civic association and had a significant influence on local politics. Under his chairmanship, the annual Nuremberg Old Town Reports were founded in 1976 as an association publication of the Old Town Friends with an annual report and well-founded specialist articles. In the years that followed, up to 2004, he influenced the development of the old town through his specialist knowledge and commitment, which he widespread in his publications.

Critics accused Erich Mulzer of preventing any modernization of the old-town character of Nuremberg. So he prevented his commitment the Augustinerhofprojekt the famous architect Helmut Jahn , which in a referendum was rejected by Nuremberg's citizens with a clear majority. As the author of the Baedeker travel guide about Nuremberg, Erich Mulzer shaped the image of Nuremberg for many tourists.

Mulzer was buried in the Johannisfriedhof in Nuremberg.
