Monument Protection Medal

Bavarian monument protection medal, front and back

The monument protection medal is an award from the Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art .

Regulations

It has been awarded annually since 1978 to people or associations who have made outstanding contributions to monument protection , the renovation of architectural monuments or the research or rescue of monuments in Bavaria . The medal has one level.

The monument protection medal is not a medal or decoration within the meaning of Art. 118 Para. 5 of the Constitution of the Free State of Bavaria and is not intended to be worn in public.

The group of those entitled to make proposals includes the district presidents , the district council presidents and the district administrators from the seven districts of Bavaria . The Bavarian Regional Association for Homeland Care as well as the Catholic dioceses of Bavaria and the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church in Bavaria are also entitled to make proposals . The governments inform the lower monument protection authorities about the possibility of proposing people and projects.

Suggestions can be made for:

Builders who have completed a particularly successful monument restoration,
People who have made a special contribution to the preservation of monuments
People who have volunteered in a special way for monument protection and preservation, for example local curators
People who make a special effort to mediate monuments

Appearance

The front of the medal shows a portrait of King Ludwig I as the founder of monument preservation in Bavaria. On the back it shows the inscriptions since 2018: "Bavarian State Ministry for Science and Art" and "For special services to monument protection".

Award winners

The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation has been publishing a brochure with the award winners every year since 2009. The brochure specifies the winners and the reason for the award of the medal.
