Ensembles
Ensemble old town Karlstadt
The ensemble ( location ) covers the entire area of the old town within the city wall.
Today's district town of the Main-Spessart district is located on the eastern bank of the Main, about 24 km upstream from Würzburg. This area was already settled in Franconian times, the village of Karlburg and the ruins of the same name bear witness to this. The city was founded opposite the fortified castle seat Karlburg on the right bank of the river under Bishop Konrad von Querfurt († 1202) between 1198 and 1202. This planned re-establishment falls at a time when the founding of cities was particularly popular, as they served to consolidate the territorial policy of the sovereigns. Karlstadt is a testament to the conscious urban policy of the aspiring episcopal sovereigns; the diocese of Würzburg recognized the importance of the city on its then north-western border as a military base, as an administrative center and as a trading town. For this reason, Bishop Otto I. von Lobdeburg (1207–1223) grants Karlstadt citizens freedom, combined with the right to exercise their own city court and administrative system and with the condition that the city be fortified with a wall within six years. The city fortifications were essentially built in two stages: Mentioned as completed in 1304, it was expanded between 1544 and 1558 under Prince-Bishop Melchior Zobel von Giebelstadt . Large parts of the city wall with defensive towers, the main gate against the river bank, the upper gate with the stately gate tower and outer works have been preserved. The former third gate at the northern end of the main street fell victim to the expansion of the city in the 19th century. To this day, the urban layout immediately reveals the planned layout: for example, a rectangle with rounded corners in which a grid-like road network is inserted. According to a scheme that was often used at the time, the market square was added in a rectangular shape to the west of the main street, which forms the backbone of the system. The square marks the center from which the city can be accessed. This is where Maingasse and Alte Bahnhofstrasse converge, which run at right angles to the main street and form a cross which divides the city into four quarters: Hohenecker, Rotensteiger, Mühlturm and Rotenturmer quarters.
With two squares, free spaces are created in the strictly maintained grid system: the market square, which is characterized by monumental buildings, above all the stepped gable building with open staircase of the town hall, which stands clearly in the middle of the city, and the church square, which is around the in a characteristic way Remote Romanesque-Gothic parish church (in the eastern half of the city) extends.
The basis for the economic development of Karlstadt is the agriculturally oriented hinterland, which was dependent on manual services and viticulture, which was first mentioned in 1244. Added to this is the function as a trading center determined by its location on the Main. The naming of the streets alone allows conclusions to be drawn about the former economic and thus social structure of the population and its impact in the various forms of residential construction. So one can assume that in the two quarters west of the main street towards the Main to the craftsmen and tradespeople were settled (Schustergasse, Färbergasse, Gerbergasse, Fischergasse). This assumption is supported by the existing structure: mostly small, one to two-storey half-timbered houses, often with workshop and storage rooms on the ground floor. To the south-east of the main street, next to small bourgeois houses, there are former farms and hackers, some stately gabled houses with high, arched gate entrances, now plastered half-timbering and protruding storeys. Along the main street and around the town hall and parish church, the residential buildings of the wealthy middle class, two to three-storey half-timbered gable buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries, are grouped. Century with storeys often protruding on console stones and rich ornamental framework. In the Baroque period, the half-timbering was often placed under plaster, the windows were provided with drilled frames made of wood or stone, and a crooked hip was usually placed on the gable roof . Despite losses, the ensemble shows itself as a historical cityscape of great uniformity, characterized by half-timbered buildings predominantly from the 16th to 18th centuries. Century. Boundary: Course of the outer city wall - Mainkai. File number: E-6-77-148-1.
Mühlbach town center ensemble
The ensemble ( location ) comprises the area of Dorfstrasse, which begins in the south at the fork in the streets to Stadelhofen and Laudenbach and ends in the north at the junction of the road to the Main Bridge (a first bridge was built in 1880). The Karlsburg towering above the north end of the street is also part of the visual relationship and gives the ensemble an important point of reference. Mühlbach, a Zeilendorf first mentioned in 1286, lies on the left bank of the Main opposite Karlstadt and at the foot of Karlsburg. The former Würzburg parish village was characterized by its proximity to Karlstadt; the residents had the citizenship of Karlstadt. Characteristic for the ensemble are mostly two-storey gable and eaves side houses from the 16th to 19th centuries. Century, which line the street on both sides. The exposed half-timbered buildings primarily shape the street scene. File number: E-6-77-148-2.
Ensemble town center Stetten
The ensemble ( location ) includes the Werntalstraße in the center of Stetten, one of the oldest settlements in Werngau, mentioned in 788 and famous as a rich wine village in the 16th century, shows in the main part of the Werntalstraße, between the bend at Eußenheimer Straße and the bend around the Parish church, the image of a stately Franconian street village. Farms and winegrowers from the 16th to 19th centuries are lined up here. Century. The mostly two-story gabled houses often have half-timbered and crooked roofs and are connected to one another by courtyard gates, either arched in sandstone or as wooden structures with a gable roof. Processional altars and house figures create sculptural accents. File number: E-6-77-148-3.
City fortifications Karlstadt
The inner city wall was built on an approximately rectangular plan. Construction began in the 1st quarter of the 13th century. 1306 was mentioned as the year of completion. The expansion took place in the 14th – 17th centuries. Century. The quarry stone wall with three towers as well as remains of towers and wall riders has been preserved in larger sections. In the 19th century, wall pillars were partially demolished and erected in place of the former Lower Gate. On the east side, the remains of the moat or fence wall running parallel to the inner city wall from 1544–1558 have been preserved. File number: D-6-77-148-3.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
