Ensemble old town Gemünden am Main
Gemünden am Main ( Lage ) was laid out in the first half of the 13th century as a high medieval, planned castle town by the Counts of Rieneck . At the important Saale crossing of Mainuferstraße there was already a fishing village on the other side of the Saale , which was named Kleingemünden after the establishment of the Neustadt. The settlement consisting of hilltop castle and valley town is in an exposed location at the confluence of the Saale and Main rivers; the castle dominates the mountain spur that pushes between the two rivers, while the city fills the triangle below. A common defensive wall, roughly in a square, encompasses the town and castle: the eastern corner is occupied by the castle; from here the wall to the city is drawn down the slope on the north-east and south-east side, the north-west and south-west side line the Saale and the Main. Since the final transfer of town and castle to the Würzburg monastery in the second half of the 15th century, the castle has been called Scherenburg. The city plan is simple and corresponds to the basic topographical situation: The main-parallel thoroughfare widens as a main street (Obertorstraße) at the angle of the confluence with the triangular market square , on which the town hall was originally free; from here two streets branch off: the Saaleübergang to the west and the Saaleuferstraße to the north; a single, short parallel street is available on the mains side (Badgasse); the west front of the parish church is directly adjacent to the main street. The row parcels are common for city foundations in the Middle Ages. The corresponding row of gabled houses largely determines the appearance of the village, on the west side of Obertorstrasse partially closed with half-timbered buildings from the 17th century. Severe destruction during World War II decimated the old building stock in the western part of the city. As part of the reconstruction , a road breakthrough was created here parallel to the Saale (Scherenbergstrasse); after the ruins of the town hall were removed , the market square remained open. In addition, the reconstruction endeavored to do justice to the basic form of the high medieval city and was carried out in restrained forms of construction, which in the elongation are committed to the home style of the 30s; in this he is to be rated as characteristic of the attitude of the early 1950s. Boundaries: in the course of the city wall: Scherenburg, city wall to the southwest, alleys between Obertorstrasse 13 and 21, Mainstrasse, Mühlgraben, alleys to the Mühltor, city wall to the southeast. File number: E-6-77-131-1.
City fortifications
The late medieval city wall encompassed the city in an almost square shape, including the Scherenburg, in front of which the angular walls extend. The city wall was later partially built over or demolished or destroyed during the war by neighboring houses. Of the three former gates, only the mill gate and a wall passage and two corner towers, in the northern course of the wall, the remainder of a semicircular shell tower, quarry stone masonry, 14/15. Century, the course of the wall on the mains side ( location ) largely reconstructed after being destroyed in the war in 1945. The wall gate, so-called clerk's gate, arched wall passage to the bank of the Main with half-timbered upper storey and gable roof, 14.-18. Century, formerly baroque half-timbered structure over consoles was rebuilt completely changed after 1945. File number: D-6-77-131-1.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
