Ensembles
Arnstein old town ensemble
The ensemble includes the old town of Arnstein. The location of Arnstein on the old trade route from Fulda to Würzburg, which crossed the Wern here, suggests early settlement; probably as the royal estate of the Carolingians. The fortified castle seat, which was originally owned by Henneberg and then belonged to the Counts of Trimberg in the 13th century, is also explained by the favorable commercial situation. When the Trimbergers ceded Arnstein to Würzburg in 1292, the place became the northern base of the area of interest of the bishopric, which set up a district and high court for the Würzburg possessions in the Werntal. As a sign of the sovereign power of the Würzburg bishops, the church building of the parish church of St. Nicholas is in clear competition with the castle of the landed aristocracy, whereby counter-Reformation considerations - Prince-Bishop Julius Echter expelled the Protestants from the city in 1587 - may have played a role.
Goldgasse and Schelleck describe the course of the former city fortifications in a semicircle extending parallel to Marktstrasse. Remnants of the city wall have been built into the outward-facing houses of these narrow ring streets. The small craft and petty bourgeois houses here underline the hierarchical graduation system of Arnstein: The two alleys mentioned not only form the edge of the old town, but are also below the market street with the houses of the wealthy citizens - below the ascending order of town hall, church, castle .
The Marktstrasse runs around the castle, parallel to the former city fortifications and, like them, forming a semicircle. In the center, Marktstrasse expands to the market square, where the town hall building rises. Behind this it opens to the Kirchberg. This creates a sloping square that extends up to the castle and connects the town hall, church and castle. At the southeast end of Marktstrasse, the baroque hospital building, which is important for the cityscape, dominates above the street. In addition, two- to three-story town houses and courtyards line the street, which are primarily characterized by baroque architectural forms and often have crooked roofs and half-timbering. File number: E-6-77-114-1.
City fortification Arnstein
Starting from the castle wall and the three-quarter-round town fortifications adapted to the terrain, preserved remains of the partially built-over town wall with semicircular and small rectangular switch towers, quarry stone, in the core late 13th century, renewed several times, the town gates in the 18th and 19th centuries. Abandoned in the 19th century, further losses due to new building measures in the second half of the 20th century. File number: D-6-77-114-1.

Remarks
- ↑ This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
