Ida Valeska Malwine Staegemann , née Kaulbach (born May 31, 1848 in Vienna , † November 16, 1905 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German actress and theater manager .

Life

She was the niece of the painter Wilhelm von Kaulbach . Her first engagement was at the Hoftheater in Hanover . Further stations were the city theaters of Linz and Pressburg .

She met her husband, the actor Eugen Staegemann , while they were working together at the Stadttheater in Frankfurt am Main .

She performed with him from 1887 to 1888 at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg and from 1888 to 1891 at the Lessing Theater in Berlin . There she went down in theater history on October 20, 1889 through her participation in the premiere of Gerhart Hauptmann's first stage work Before Sunrise .

Theodor Fontane wrote about her portrayal of the role of Frau Spillern  : An artistic achievement of the first order was the crawling Frau Spiller with her half hump, with her perfect service of love, with her parting and her pious look, with her grace and her search for the best piece. Ms. Staegemann obviously gave the role after life.

When her husband took over the management of the Stadttheater Düsseldorf in 1891 , she performed on this stage for a year before finally becoming a member of the New Theater in Berlin from 1892 to 1893 . After this engagement, she withdrew from the stage.

When Eugen Staegemann died in 1899, she continued to run the company until 1900.
