The ensemble includes the castle and castle settlement within the common fortification line. Rothenfels Castle was built around 1150 by Marquard von Grumbach at an exposed point on a mountain spur between the Main and Stelzengrabental. At their feet, the associated settlement developed on a narrow strip of banks along the Maintalstrasse. Rothenfels has been a town since the 14th century; At the latest since the final transfer to the Würzburg monastery in 1474, the castle and castle settlement appear as a fortified unit. The castle dominates the main valley and the village below with its bering and its keep from the 12th century as well as the baroque mansard roof of the high monastery building built in the middle of the 18th century. The place itself extends along the Mainuferstraße, whereby the narrow location between the castle hill and the river does not allow the formation of a market place or clearly drawn side streets. An implied crossing situation with a space-like expansion results from the branching off of the Burggasse, which climbs steeply to the church and the castle hill, which is the entrance to the former river crossing. A narrow side street in an elevated position on the mountain slope behind the main street in a parallel direction (Obere Gasse). The parcels are lined up in close succession on both sides of the main road. The properties each show a stately front building in the gable position to the main street, connected with rear buildings, which on the mains side mostly form the river front, on the mountain side adjoin the higher Obere Gasse. In the middle section, the setting back of two properties on the mountain side creates a small space. The Obere Gasse has small houses. The townscape, preserved undisturbed in its historical form, is largely determined by remodeling of the late Renaissance and Baroque periods . Stately houses from the heyday of half-timbered construction, enlivened by baroque house figures, line the main street. The massive late-Renaissance buildings of the town hall with its columned front and the Julius hospital with its curved gables create fixed anchor points within the regular row of town houses. The parish is set apart from the town on the outskirts. The parish church, shielded from the main road by the hospital building, towers over the town with its late baroque tower and visually connects it with the hilltop castle. In the distance, the interplay of castle and castle settlement offers an impressive picture. The immediate river bank is obstructed by the embankment of the Lohr – Wertheim line, opened in 1881 , which now serves as a bypass. File number: E-6-77-181-1.

Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
