The noble lords of Grumbach belonged to the most important dynasty families in Franconia and died out in the male line in 1243. They are to be distinguished from the ministerials of Grumbach , a line of the Franconian noble family Wolffskeel .

history

The oldest documented mention of the noble free of Grumbach comes from the 11th century. In 1099 Markward I. von Grumbach appeared as Vogt of the Schlüchtern monastery and a year later as Vogt of the Neustadt am Main monastery . His son Markward II was a loyal follower of the Staufer . Markward III. was appointed governor of Lombardy by Emperor Barbarossa in 1164 . In 1243 the male line died out with Albert, Herr zu Rothenfels . The possessions passed to Count Ludwig von Rieneck , who was married to Albert's daughter, Nobility.
