The synagogue in Arnstein , a town in the Lower Franconian district of Main-Spessart ( Bavaria ), was built in 1819. The secular synagogue at Goldgasse 28 is a protected architectural monument .

history

The synagogue, built in 1819 in the classical style, was renovated in 1869, 1905 (in Art Nouveau ) and 1934. During the last renovation in 1934, Genesis 28:17 was added in Hebrew as the portal inscription . Translation: Here is nothing but God's house and here is the gate to heaven .

Due to the rapidly decreasing number of members, no minyan could come into being at the beginning of the 20th century . In April 1938 the synagogue building and the school house were sold to the neighbor Willi Popp. Some of the rituals came to Schweinfurt, where they were destroyed in the November pogrom in 1938 .

After 1945, following the completion of the restitution proceedings via the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization (JRSO), the building came into private ownership and was converted into a residential and commercial building in 1954. Since 1979 the building has been used as a warehouse. In 1994 the building was acquired by the city of Arnstein. The restoration of the former synagogue could not begin until the end of 2008. The earlier renovations had greatly changed the appearance of the synagogue. The renovation measures led to the restoration of the galleries and the addition of the stairs.

On June 8, 2012, the renovated synagogue was opened, which serves as a place of culture and learning. A permanent exhibition can be seen on the subject of rural Jewry in Lower Franconia .
