Johannes Carl
Johannes Carl (sometimes referred to as Johannes Karl ; * March 21, 1806 in Nauheim , Electorate of Hesse ; † January 25, 1887 in Preungesheim , today in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German Protestant theologian, consistorial counselor and poet.
Life
Johannes Carl was the son of a saltworks worker and initially also became a day laborer in the saltworks in his hometown. The desire to become a teacher soon awoke in him, and he first attended the secondary school in Hanau and later studied theology at the University of Marburg . In 1838 he became vicar and assistant preacher and in 1840 the third pastor at the Protestant Johanneskirche in Hanau. In the "Kurhessischen symbol dispute " about the strict obligation of Protestant clergy to use the symbolic scripts in the Evangelical Church in Hessen-Kassel , Carl took the side of the Marburg canon lawyer Johann Wilhelm Bickell with three pamphlets . In 1848 he was admitted to the Hessian Consistory of the United Diocese of Hanau-Fulda and in 1851 he became consistorial councilor. In 1857 he was also a school clerk. From 1861 Carl was pastor at the Kreuzkirche in Preungesheim, where he stayed until the end of his life.
From 1836 Carl was also active as a writer. In 1842 he composed the Christmas carol The Christmas tree is the most beautiful tree , for which Georg Eisenbach , cantor at the St. Mary's Church in Hanau , composed the melody. In 1875 he published an extensive legacy volume, which u. a. contains his collected self-confessed poems.
Carl had been married to Luise Albertine Spatz (1818–1873) since 1841, with whom he had four children.
