St. Peter and Paul

The Gothic parish church of St. Peter and Paul is located in the middle of the pedestrian zone in Gemünden . It is under the patronage of Saints Peter and Paul .

history

As early as 1316 there was a small church consecrated to the Apostle Peter in Gemünden . The year 1341 is considered to be the founding year of the parish , previously the church was a branch church of the parish of Wiesenfeld . Gemünden belonged to the Würzburg monastery since 1469 . Due to the growing population, the small church had to give way to the new building of a hall church in 1468–88 . The Reformation was in the County of Rieneck with the conversion of Count Philip III. introduced to the Lutheran faith. The city was surrounded on three sides by the County of Rieneck. After the Rieneck family died out, the county fell back to Kurmainz in 1559 , who carried out the re-Catholicization of the subjects . Church patronage was now the Mainz Cathedral Chapter . In 1815 the city fell to Bavaria. The church was destroyed during World War II. Only the foundation walls and the ground floor of the tower with the ribbed vault were spared from the war. The reconstruction took place in 1948–1950 as a free reconstruction in the old cubature with the addition of the side aisle and a single-storey gate passage.

description

Today's two-aisled hall church is a plastered masonry structure with sandstone pilaster strips at the corners. It has a high, with a gable roof covered the central nave and low, with a shed roof provided aisle. Inside there are two sculptures of Saints Peter and Paul and a monumental epitaph from 1601 with reference to Simon Hill .

In the bell tower originally hung four bells , the oldest of 1477, the youngest of 1611. Their inscriptions are indecipherable. There is no bell in the bell gable . The recessed substructure of the choir tower dates from 1488, as does the polygonal apse at the end of the choir . At this time, frescoes were created on the north inner wall of the nave .

The bell tower has a verschieferten spire with four crowd watchtowers .

In 1950 the organ with two manuals , a pedal and 18 stops Opus 1007 was procured from Johannes Klais Orgelbau . Information about the organ can be found here:

Three bells were added in 1956. In 1956/57 the tower was reconstructed with an addition . The big Christ bell could not be bought until 1970. In 1987 the church was renovated inside.
