Hubert Weber (born August 18, 1920 in Staffelstein ; † February 11, 2013 in Lichtenfels ) was a German painter and sculptor .

Life

Weber lost both hands on the way from the Balkans to the Russian front in 1941 . He was first taken to a Viennese military hospital , where he was given makeshift care. After the bone on the left upper arm was completely smashed, Weber received no hope of recovery, rather the doctors tried to convince him of the need to amputate the left arm to the shoulder joint. He did everything he could to prevent this.

After a few weeks Weber was allowed to go on home leave for the first time . His father did not want to be satisfied with the fate of his son and contacted various doctors. He learned about the healing successes with the prostheses from Prof. Ferdinand Sauerbruch at the Charité in Berlin and presented his son's concerns there. After a thorough investigation, Sauerbruch was ready to take on the case. Weber was released from the military hospital in Vienna and worked from 1941 to 1942 under the ward doctor Dr. Good cheer for treatment in the Charité . He was operated there ten times within a year, with Prof. Sauerbruch performing all the important operations himself. The left upper arm was spanned with half the tibia over a length of 17 cm. A successful overvoltage of this magnitude was a unique achievement at the time. After the right arm had first been restored to such an extent that Hubert Weber could wear and operate an arbitrarily movable Sauerbruch prosthesis , he began to draw. Sauerbruch was impressed by his pen drawings and often took his patient with him to the classroom , where he let him demonstrate his newly acquired skills. When the worse injured left arm was restored to such an extent that Hubert Weber was also able to wear an arbitrarily movable Sauerbruch prosthesis on the left, he also accompanied Sauerbruch to congresses in order to demonstrate his possibilities of movement with the new hands.

Sauerbruch recognized Hubert Weber's talent and persistence and advised him to make art his profession. With Sauerbruch's help, Weber was able to complete an introductory course during his healing at the Reimann School in Berlin in preparation for his later art studies. After his discharge from the Charité, Hubert Weber made a first portrait of Sauerbruch and presented it to him in the lecture hall.

In 1943, after passing the entrance examination, Hubert Weber began studying art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg . After the first semester, the academy was destroyed as a result of the war and relocated to Ellingen Castle . He stayed there until shortly after the end of the war and then went to the academy in Stuttgart , where he worked in Prof. Baumeister's master class . After completing his studies, Weber first began painting and then devoted himself increasingly to building art . He was not satisfied with making drafts, but also executed his wall paintings himself. He created sgraffito work and concrete glass windows, designed embossed copper walls and created walls in stone mosaic. He designed many fountains and made bronze sculptures. Hubert Weber worked in hospitals, schools, universities and administrative buildings. One focus of his work was the design of churches. More than 20 mostly fully equipped Catholic churches bear his signature.

Hubert Weber won several competitions nationwide, took part in artistic exhibitions and received the state award from the University of Münster / Westphalia . On the occasion of his 60th birthday, the Obermain-Tagblatt headlined in August 1980: “Even Hua Guofeng in the guest book”. The reason for this was his art exhibition in the Bonn Press Club from September 25 to October 30, 1979. In the article the Obermain-Tagblatt writes: “… One of his most recent successes was the exhibition in September last year in the Bonn Press Club, in which he painted paintings and graphics and sculptures and thus met with great interest not only from television and the press, but also from political celebrities. Federal President Carstens and the delegation of the Chinese Prime Minister Hou Guofeng visited the exhibition and signed Hubert Weber's guest book; Bundestag President Richard Stücklen bought the large acrylic painting Raumknoten for the German Bundestag. ”In 1980 he was awarded the City of Lichtenfels Culture Medal (obituary of the City of Lichtenfels from February 19, 2013 in the Obermain-Tagblatt). After having made outstanding contributions to the preservation of the cultural assets of his homeland as a district home nurse in the Lichtenfels district (Upper Franconia) since 1980 , he was awarded the Bavarian Monument Protection Medal in 1987 and in 1997 with the Federal Cross of Merit for Art and Culture from the Bavarian Minister of Culture. (Obituary of the district administrator of Lichtenfels from February 19, 2013 in the Obermain-Tagblatt). He worked as a district home nurse until his 80th birthday and was then made an honorary district home nurse by District Administrator Reinhard Leutner (Lichtenfels / Bavaria). Hubert Weber received the rare Melvin Jones Fellow award from Lions International on his 90th birthday . He died on February 11, 2013 in Lichtenfels and was buried on February 19, 2013 in the Lichtenfels cemetery.
