Karlstein Castle (Bavaria)
The Karlstejn castle is in the market Regenstauf in the district of Regensburg and is in the district Karlstein.
history
The name Karlstein can be derived from the castle of Chadolth (Chadoltstein). The first lords of Karlstein were the Hofer von Lobenstein . Before 1381 the property was pledged to the Lords of Leuchtenberg , who rebuilt the castle in 1393. The medieval Karlstein Castle originally stood here, which was completely overbuilt by today's palace.
In 1632 the castle was sacked by the Swedish general Craz during the Thirty Years War .
In the course of time the owner of the castle changed several times. In 1766, Baron von Schneid was the local owner. He bequeathed the property to his nephew, Baron Karl Josef von Drechsel, in 1862 . Since then it has been owned by the Counts of Drechsel-Deufstetten.
The resistance fighter against National Socialism, Max Ulrich Graf von Drechsel, grew up at Karlstein Castle .
building
After 1900 the castle was expanded and rebuilt, which gave it its present form. The building in the neo-Gothic style is located in a park and has four wings. The St. Ulrich castle chapel is located in the south wing . A Catholic service is held here once a week . In the chapel are the crypts of two former residents of the castle, Messrs Teuffel von Pirkensee and Hornbeck.
The castle is still privately owned by the Counts of Drechsel ; it can therefore only be viewed from the outside.
