Burgstall Lichtenroth

The presumably high medieval Lichtenroth castle stable , also called Lichtenrod , is an abandoned hilltop castle on a rocky ridge that extends into the Naab valley, which is now known as the "Angel's Rock". The Burgstall , now a ground monument , is located between the communities of Pielenhofen and Duggendorf in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg in Bavaria , Germany . The castle is completely gone today, only the very deep ditch and some ruined foundation walls can be seen .

Geographical location

The former castle is located on the steeply sloping eastern slope of the Naab Valley, which is deeply cut here, between Duggendorf in the north and Pielenhofen in the south, approximately at the level of Oberfreiung. The Burgstall is located on a rock ridge protruding into the valley at about 485  m above sea level. NN height and thus about 150 meters above the valley. The castle site is about 2,620 meters north-north-west of the Cistercian convent in Pielenhofen, or 14.5 kilometers north-west of Regensburg .

There are other former medieval castles in the vicinity, the Löweneck castle stables just 6 kilometers south of the village of Penk , and Wolfsegg Castle in the town of the same name 2.5 kilometers northeast . 5.4 km south-west lies castle ruins Laaber on the market Laaber , and a few other castles in the valley of the Black Laber .

history

The castle, now a barn that is difficult to recognize above ground, was built in the 13th century to protect the "Oberpfälzer Eisenstraße" or as a clearing castle for the diocese of Regensburg, abandoned early and mentioned as "Burgstall zu Lichtenrode" in 1297.

It is not certain whether the castle was originally owned by the knight Ulrich von Pyelnhof, probably a vassal of the Regensburg bishop and the lords of Laaber. The castle was owned by the Jordan zu Murach until 1297 and then by the nuns of the Pielenhofen monastery .
