The Burgstall Martinsberg is the name of a former noble castle from the High Middle Ages east of the Laaber market in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg in Bavaria . Today's Burgstall was the ancestral seat and predecessor castle of the Lords of Laaber , who moved their headquarters to Laaber Castle around 1200 .
history
An ancient St. Martin's Church still stood on the rugged rocky slopes above the Labertal in 1593. There is no historical information about the nameless Burgstall , it was probably the family seat of the Lords of Laaber and the forerunner of Laaber Castle, which was built around 1200 . It stood above the Königsstrasse, known since the early 11th century, along the valley of the black Laber, which connected the royal palaces in Regensburg , Nuremberg , Forchheim and Bamberg .
Like the other early castles along the Schwarze Laber (Stifterfelsen, Egelsburg , Dirkelmühle and Eselburg), their main task was probably the protection and control of this important highway. After it was moved to the Alb plateau in the late 12th century, the castle lost its importance.
description
The outer dimensions of the summit castle were around 160 meters long and up to 50 meters wide.
The Vorburg is the hinterland by a slope and a large stage almost semi-circular wall with an up to 2.5 meters deep trench secured. The eastern part with wall and moat is exposed. The western part is covered by a pine forest. A cistern was built on the south-east slope , from which a gorge almost 4 meters deep has been preserved.
The core castle occupied the western tip of the Martinsberg and offers a particularly impressive view of the landscape.
No buildings can be identified on the 40 meter long and 17 meter wide plateau.
trail
The Martinsberg is located on the “Burgensteig im Tal der Schwarzen Laber” hiking trail. Appropriate signs mark the way.
