Schlössl tower hill

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Schlössl tower hill is located in the municipality of Pentling in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg in Bavaria . Remnants of it (popularly known as Römerschanze ) can be found northeast of Unterirading next to the Walba restaurant.

history

For a long time this complex was interpreted as a Roman burgus . This is probably due to its location on the edge of a steep slope to the Danube , on which the Limes ran. However, the complex differs fundamentally from a Roman Burgus due to its round shape and its location on a tower hill . It is assumed that this complex dates from the high Middle Ages (14th century). It is assigned an observation and control function. So far no connections with noble or ministerial families have been known or systematic excavations have been made.

Today's appearance

At the castle site there is a funnel-shaped pit with remains of the wall on the edges. Loose chunks of stone and mortar are present. The foundations of the wall were also lost through stone robbery. The hill is surrounded by a ditch up to 0.5 m deep with an almost circular course, which connects directly to the steep slope to the Danube in the northwest. The maximum diameter is 40 m. Overall, the complex can be interpreted as a trench-protected hill tower castle.
