Teuffel von Birkensee (also Teufel von Pirkensee or von Pirckensee , Freiherren Teufel zu Guntersdorf ) is the name of a Bavarian and Baden noble family originally from Nuremberg . They belong to the steps of rbürtigen nobility and are first documented in 1250 at the marriage of Eberhard Ebner von Eschenbach noted with a born Teuffel.

Origin and possessions

The Teuffel von Pirkensee in Upper Palatinate, Lower Austria and Westphalia

The von Teuffel family owned the Pirkensee Castle in Maxhütte-Haidhof (Floriansweg 7) in the Schwandorf district in Upper Palatinate from 1521 to 1731 . After that, a line was called Teuffel von Pirkensee (today: Birkensee ).

The other properties of Maxhütte-Haidhof include u. a. Leonberg Castle in the Leonberg district (Burgweg 5) . In addition to Teublitz Castle in Teublitz , the Upper Palatinate possessions also include two estates located in Duggendorf in the Regensburg district ( Bavaria ), Hochdorf Castle (Duggendorf) (Schlossstrasse 4) in the district of Hochdorf and Heitzenhofen Castle (Naabstrasse 5).

The Tatenhausen moated castle in the Tatenhauser Wald near Halle in the Gütersloh district ( Westphalia ) and Guntersdorf Castle near Hollabrunn in Lower Austria are also part of it.

The Teuffel at Guntersdorf Castle

In the 16th century, Christoph Teufel married the daughter and heiress of Baron Johann von Weisspriach from the von Weißpriach family (noble family) at Guntersdorf Castle. Andreas Teuffel (* 1515; † 1592) was the supreme stable master and imperial council and was raised to the baron status in 1566 with the nobility title "zu Guntersdorf". The Freiherren Teufel zu Guntersdorf were active Protestants , the castle played a role as a religious center during the Reformation . Otto Christoph Teufel, Freiherr zu Guntersdorf , sold the manor in 1688.

Teublitz Castle and Leonberg Castle were transferred from Georg Leo von Sinzenhof to Wolfgang Teufel von Pirkensee in 1603 . The castle was soon sold. Teublitz Castle was replaced by a new building from 1750 and was inherited by relatives in 1795. For a short time, Hochdorf Castle (1708–1735) in Bavaria was owned by the family and from 1610–17 Wolf Balthasar was the guardian of Heitzenhofen Castle.

The Teuffel from Birkensee

The first owner of Pirkensee was Georg Teufel , who was allowed to call himself Teufel von Pirkensee after acquiring the property . In 1540 he had converted to Regenstauf in the district of Regensburg (Bavaria) and converted to Protestantism, which became compulsory teaching in Pfalz-Neuburg after Ottheinrich's religious edict in 1542 . His wife was a Grünbeck . They had two sons, the older wolf (*?; † 1594) was able to take over Pirkensee and from 1556–1559 was the keeper of Regenstauf. He lost his post because of manslaughter. Later, however, he managed to win the prince's favor again and he became a forester at Burglengenfeld . However, he was later again dishonorably dismissed from the forest service.

The younger son Conrad (* 1527; † 1582) became a soldier and from 1567 was a nurse at Gundelfingen . He did military service for Albrecht Alcibiades of Brandenburg-Kulmbach , Emperor Karl V in the Schmalkaldic War , for the French King Henry II in France and Scotland , the Duke of Alba in Italy. In the Second Margrave War he was wounded in front of Nuremberg and lost an eye. He fought on the side of Emperor Charles V in Ticino . After the emperor's death in 1558, Conrad became court master of the Palatinate under Duke Wolfgang von Pfalz-Zweibrücken and went with him to war against the Turks in Hungary in 1566 and back to France in 1569. After 24 years in the war, he became a nurse in Gundelfingen. Conrad Teufel died on May 6, 1582 in Gundelfingen. When he died, he left six underage children still alive. His first wife was a Magdalena von Pertolzhofen (⚭ 1556) von Altendorf , she probably died in childbed. His second wife was Susanna Altmann (⚭ after 1565) from Schwandorf (her brother was Kastner zu Burglengenfeld ). With the help of her nephew Georg Teufel, Susanna acquired the Schwarzenfeld estate . The children include Philipp Hans , Anna Maria , Johann Conrad , Heinrich and Anna Elisabeth .

Philipp Hans Teufel von Pirkensee (* approx. 1571, † 1595) fell in Hungary and remained unmarried. Anna Maria Teufel von Pirkensee (born April 9, 1572 in Gundelfingen, † April 1, 1614 in Schnürpflingen ) was maid of honor at the Württemberg court until 1593. She married Eitel Hans Besserer von Schnürpflingen in 1593 . Regina Teuffel von Pirkensee (* approx. 1574, † approx. 1599) remained unmarried and was court maid of the Palatinate-Neuburg region. Johann Conrad Teufel von Pirkensee zu Schwarzenfeld (* around 1575, † before 1637) entered into a first marriage with Appolonia Elisabeth , nee. von Wildberg (noble family) . The second time he married Amalia , b. von Winterfeld (noble family) . In 1607 he was Landsasse auf Schwarzenfeld, from 1613 to 1619 a nurse and forester in Bruck in the Upper Palatinate . He refused to convert to Catholicism . Later he was stable master at the Württemberg court. He fathered three children. Heinrich Teuffel von Pirkensee (* around 1575, † July 10, 1629 in Öschelbronn ). His first marriage was to a daughter of Balthasar von Validlingen . In his second marriage on April 24, 1624 he married Esther , born in Stuttgart . von Trauschwitz (noble family) . He was a rider captain , Hofjunker , Steward and Steward worked. In 1618 the purchase of Öschelbronn and Sindlingen took place, after his death both went to his brother-in-law Heinrich von Trauschwitz and to his sister Anna Elisabeth Teuffel von Pirkensee (* around 1580, † around 1636 at the plague), who with Johann Wilhelm von Rußwurm Haselbach , a Palatinate-Neuburgian colonel hunter and falcon master, was married.

Branch line of the Teuffel von Birkensee in Baden

A branch line continued in the Grand Duchy of Baden when the main line had already died out, and was confirmed in the baron class by the Baden Grand Duke. At the beginning of the 18th century they were the owners of the manor in Oberredwitz and had the church patronage of the Anna Church , as shown by coats of arms.

Family members are still listed in the Bavarian nobility register today . As knights, Teuffel von Birkensee belonged to the aristocratic aristocracy in Central Europe. Andreas Teuffel was raised to the baron status (1566) with the predicate "zu Guntersdorf", so that from then on his family called themselves Baron Teuffel zu Guntersdorf .
