The Biokreis e.V. - Association for organic farming and healthy nutrition is a cultivation association and member of the Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW) based in Passau. Around 1,200 Biokreis farmers currently cultivate more than 60,000 hectares across Germany. More than 180 processors, traders and restaurateurs process the products of the Biokreis farmers. In addition, around 150 consumers are members of the Biokreis.

History and organization

The Biokreis was founded in 1979 as a recognized non-profit organization under the name Biokreis Ostbayern eV by Heinz Jacob, Passau, and renamed Biokreis eV in 1999 . It has its headquarters in Passau, Bavaria . As an association that operates nationwide, it attaches particular importance to a grassroots democratic organization made possible by the cooperation of volunteer practitioners on the board and full-time consultants. Advice as well as representation of interests and marketing support on site are guaranteed by the Biokreis regional associations. In addition to the Bavarian producer ring (based in Passau) and the North Rhine-Westphalia producer ring (based in Hilchenbach ), the Mitte producer ring (based in Wiesbaden ) advises members in Hesse, Thuringia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland. The Central Germany producer ring (based in Quedlinburg ) is responsible for the federal states of Saxony-Anhalt, Saxony and Thuringia as well as the South-Brandenburg region and the area of ​​the North-East producer ring (based in Berlin ) extends from Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to to northern Brandenburg. The Biokreis is also active in Austria.

The Biokreis supports producers and processors in the production and marketing of organic food and promotes organic farming. The requirements of the Biokreis guidelines far exceed the legal requirements of the EU organic regulation . The association relies on regional structures and market partnerships between the member groups. The specially developed regional & fair seal also guarantees craftsmanship and fair conditions for everyone involved in the production process, in addition to the local, ecological production method.

Alignment

The aim of the ecological cultivation association Biokreis is to support the interests of ecological agriculture . It stands for animal welfare, a resource-saving circular economy, regional cooperation and value creation as well as artisanal food processing. The guidelines are binding for all members; if they are complied with, the Biokreis issues a certificate for the labeling of organically produced foods. The association presents itself to the outside world through press and public relations work. The Biokreis publishes the magazine bioNachrichten , which appears every two months. In terms of political work, the Biokreis is active at the state, federal and international level for the further development of organic farming.
