history

Until the 19th century

Market square with town hall (right)

The Langquaid market is an old Lower Bavarian settlement in the valley of the Große Laaber. The first traces of settlement can be seen from the early Stone Age, and numerous finds date from the Bronze Age. As the probably oldest name of the settlement "Verroniwaida" expresses it, the extensive pastureland in the valley area of the Laaber was a favorable settlement place for cattle herders. This place name appeared for the first time around 750 AD and was also mentioned around 771 by Bishop Arbeo von Freising in the biography of St. Emmeram , which he wrote .

Located at a fork in the road, which has been important since ancient times, the small settlement developed into a larger town in the following centuries, the name of which "Langquat" first appeared in documents around 1200. The fact that the settlement made significant progress as the natural center of a wide area is evident from the granting of market rights in the 1280s and the establishment of a customs post a little later.

One of the ducal customs officers, Konrad der Hueber, donated a benefit to the church of St. Jakob in 1412 and thus secured a priest of its own for the market. The current parish church dates back to a system from the 13th century and still shows late Romanesque elements. In the 15th century there was a thorough renovation in the Gothic style, and the church got its current baroque character when it was renovated around 1740.

The Langquaid market continued to develop, but the town and its surrounding area were not spared the stormy times of war and the associated setbacks, which reached a climax in the Thirty Years' War with several pillages. Therefore, there are no original documents about the market privileges and the market coat of arms, which represents St. James, only confirmations of the lost documents, such as B. from 1486 by Duke Albrecht IV. Or 1659 by Elector Ferdinand Maria. When the war raged between the French-Bavarian troops under Napoleon and the Austrian army in 1809 and culminated in the Battle of Eggmühl, Langquaid was largely spared.

In the 19th century, the market took part in the ongoing technical development. From 1851 Langquaid was a post office, in 1875 a telegraph station created quick connections to the wide world. A special event was the opening of the Eggmühl - Langquaid railway line, for which the Langquaid mayor Münsterer had made an emphatic effort.

In 1613, the citizens of Langquaid set up a foundation for the poor in order to provide shelter for needy citizens in a community center. In 1856 a workers' support association was founded with the aim of building a hospital in Langquaid, which was achieved in 1866.

20th and 21st centuries

Langquaid has retained its economic importance as a shopping and transshipment point for a large area over the centuries, as shown by the five annual markets in the course of the year, in addition to which there was a weekly piglet market on the marketplace until the 1990s. The Langquaid market has had its own hop seal since 1891 and is one of the Hallertau's seal districts, even though hop growing has lost its importance there. After the Second World War, numerous expellees found a new base in Langquaid.

A brisk construction activity developed, which caused extensive settlement areas to grow around the old market core and thus the number of inhabitants increased. The Langquaid market is today the center of a large administrative community and has a day nursery, three kindergartens, a primary and secondary school and sports facilities. There are hiking trails in the valley of the Große Laaber and the wooded hill country.

Incorporations

During the municipal reform in Bavaria on July 1, 1972, the municipality of Oberleierndorf joined Langquaid. On January 1, 1978, the previously independent communities Leitenhausen and Schneidhart and parts of the dissolved community Sandsbach were incorporated. Adlhausen , Niederleierndorf and Paring followed on May 1, 1978 .

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the population increased from 3,836 to 5,733 by 1,897 inhabitants or 49.5%.

coat of arms

Description of coat of arms

In gold, the bust of a bearded saint dressed in blue and with a black hat; on the brim and on the coat there are two silver pilgrim shells.

Coat of arms history

According to recent opinion, the saint in the coat of arms is probably St. James, the patron saint of the parish church of Langquaid. This is also supported by the heraldic attributes, the pilgrim shells on the coat and the brim of the hat. Even in Hupp (1912), the blazon of the “bust of St. Rochus “the speech, the patron saint against the plague. However, this interpretation has been abandoned, the official blazon is not fixed. The design of the saint changed repeatedly, while the tinging was fixed since the confirmation of the lost market privileges by Duke Albrecht IV in 1486. This mentions the “previous coat of arms”, that is, the beginning of the coat of arms was a long time ago. The fragment of a seal imprint from 1494 suggests that the first typar with the coat of arms was created in the early 15th century.

Heraldic data

Coat of arms: since 15th century Legal basis: The coat of arms is handed down in the seal; Seal guidance documented since the early 15th century. Proof: Confirmation of the coat of arms in a document from Duke Albrechts IV of March 22, 1486

Attractions

The historic market square is lined with town houses whose stepped gables and turrets date back to the 19th century. The parish church of St. Jakob is essentially a late Romanesque church, which was converted to Baroque style in the 18th century. The baroque pilgrimage church of St. Ottilia is located seven kilometers north of Langquaid in the Hellring district . The chapel of St. Koloman is located five kilometers south on a hill above the valley of the Große Laaber. The Paring Monastery is located in the district of the same name .
