St. Leonhard Church

Until the church is planted

The place was first mentioned in a document in 864. Further mentions followed as Agelspach (approx. 1145), Ailgilspach (approx. 1190) and Egilspach (approx. 1160). The name is probably derived from a proper name Agil , Egil , Aigil or Eigil , supplemented by the Old High German word for "Bach", pah (also bah , pach ). Aiglsbach belonged to the Munich Rent Office and to the Mainburg Regional Court of the Electorate of Bavaria . In the course of the administrative reforms in the Kingdom of Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

Name change

The official spelling of the community name was changed in 1911 from "Aigelsbach" to "Aiglsbach".

Origin of name

In the Bavarian Spessart, the name of the Eichelsbach district of the Elsenfeld market is also traced back to "Egilespach" or something similar. Aigil or Egil was a common name in the Middle Ages - Eichelsbach in the Spessart is said to have been named after an abbot Aigil of a monastery in / near Fulda.
