history

Prehistory and early history

The easily cultivable valley of the Danube is ancient settlement soil. This is how the Neanderthals lived here. Hand axes that were found testify to this . Even in the later pre-Christian centuries, people probably always lived here, as the tombs and remains of settlements prove.

Due to the mining of iron , the area around Saal was part of a densely populated center of the Celts from around 400 to 100 BC . Traces of these Celtic entrenchments (fortified protective structures) can still be found today . The wall of this fortification on the Ringberg near Untersaal is 2.2 kilometers long. Similar systems can be found in Kleingiersdorf and Unterschambach .

The Celts had nothing to oppose the advancing Romans . The Danube now became part of the Limes , which was supposed to protect the Roman Empire. The Romans also built fortified structures for protection. A burgus was built in Untersaal around 350 AD .

The Feckinger Bach , the former Sala, gave its name to Saal from 400 AD. Little historical facts are known from the time of the Great Migration . Even in this warlike time, the Kelheim area probably always offered people suitable settlement grounds. So graves of the Bavarians are proven.

middle Ages

In 1002 the were kingdom Niedermünster in Regensburg of King Henry II. Writing royal protection , immunity and voting rights conferred. Thus ownership and rights to an area that reached from Kelheim to Einmuß went to the Reichsstift Niedermünster. Now the first, documentary mention of the later municipality takes place. Under the Niedermünster monastery, hall was also the seat of a Schrannen court .

Modern times

From 1792–1794, the often impassable road between Bad Abbach and Saal was expanded by Elector Karl Theodor , which is reminiscent of the lion monument located between the two communities .

After secularization in 1803, Saal became part of the Bavarian state. As a result, the construction of a post road and the connection to the railway began, which laid the foundation for the economic development of Saal.

From November 30, 1944 to April 18 or 19, 1945 there was a satellite camp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp near Saal - on the road to Teugn - with the code name: Me-Ringberg . Here tunnels were to be created for an underground aircraft production of Messerschmitt GmbH in Regensburg and Obertraubling , as this had been exposed to air raids by the Allies since 1943 . At times up to 671 prisoners lived there under grueling working and living conditions. At least 236 men were killed in the hall. Another 16 prisoners died when the camp was liquidated when the SS set fire to the sick barracks. The warehouse near Saal was one of many "hidden" production facilities in southern Germany. A memorial stone in the cemetery hall points to the victims of the forced laborers.

In 2002, the hall celebrated its first documentary mention 1000 years ago. Events were held throughout the year. An exhibition in the town hall with pictures from the history of Saal from February to November, an anniversary ceremony in April and a youth festival in November to round off the jubilee year. The high point of the celebrations was from July 19 to 21, starting with a Bavarian home evening in Untersaal and a gigantic historical festival on the other two days at different locations in Obersaal. The living history of Saal could be admired in four places. A continuous program on three stages provided entertainment with performances, musical performances and demonstrations of historical handicrafts and devices. The highlight was the great historical pageant "from the Stone Age to the industrial community" with 109 groups and around 2100 participants. The historical spectacle counted over 20,000 visitors.
