The Eggmühl – Langquaid line, also known as the local line Schierling – Langquaid or Laabertalbahn , is a 10.3-kilometer standard-gauge branch line in Bavaria . It runs from Eggmühl station in the valley of the Große Laber to Langquaid and is operated by RSE Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn GmbH.

history

Towards the end of the 19th century there were efforts to connect the Langquaid market to the railway network. In 1896, seven communities in the valley of the Große Laber merged to form the railway committee to build the Laabertal railway on the right side of the valley . However, due to the better development of the villages in the valley, Minister Friedrich Krafft von Crailsheim ordered the route to be planned on the left of the Große Laber. On 9 January 1898, the members Royal Bavarian State Railways permission to a distance of Eggmühl to Langquaid project . Construction manager Friedrich Kriechbaum took over the management . The route was finally determined on December 30, 1901. On March 31, 1902, the building permit was granted. The construction work was completed on October 15, 1903, and the technical acceptance took place just two days later . On October 21, 1903, the Eggmühl – Langquaid local railway went into operation.

The freight was up in 1964 with steam then, starting with diesel locomotives performed. In 1968 the passenger traffic, which was last carried out with rail buses , was stopped . In 1996, when the route was still being operated three times a week by DB Cargo from Regensburg Ost station, Deutsche Bahn first considered discontinuing freight traffic. On June 1, 1999, this was discontinued on the Eichbühl – Langquaid section. In cooperation with a local initiative and local politics, the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn took over this section from DB Netz on January 1, 2000 on the basis of a lease agreement . The section from Eggmühl to Eichbühl initially remained in the hands of DB Netz, as the ammunition depot, which was still in operation at the time, ensured a considerable volume of goods traffic. Five years later, this too was transferred to the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn after DB Cargo had stopped freight traffic there in 2002.

Freight traffic has been carried out since 2001 with a type MV 9 locomotive from Orenstein & Koppel , which the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn bought from the Zeil am Main sugar factory . Since 2019, a class R 42 C locomotive from Jung Jungenthal has also been available, which was taken over in 2006 from the former ammunition depot of the Bundeswehr in Schierling. The freight traffic points Eggmühl, Schierling and Langquaid are served by the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn in cooperation with DB Cargo with block trains ; there are each loading points available.

In addition, in 2002 the Rhein-Sieg-Eisenbahn acquired an Auwärter rail bus trailer from the Württembergische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft , built in 1963, with 50 seats. Since 2002, this has formed the Bockerl together with the MV 9 locomotive , with which passenger train journeys are offered on six market Sundays in Langquaid and Schierling every year . The schedule is in the course book of the Bavarian railway company printed.

In the fall of 2015, the PRO-Städtedreiecksbahn initiative was founded with the aim of reactivating the route for passenger traffic. A “Stadt-Umlandbahn Regensburg” with the terminus Burglengenfeld and Langquaid is discussed.

In recent years, maintenance work has been carried out on the line. In autumn 2017, for example, the building was closed due to defects in the superstructure . After installing new sleepers , the route was reopened in January 2018. In 2019, around 1,100 wooden sleepers were replaced again.

Route description

course

The Eggmühl – Langquaid branch line begins at Eggmühl station at 0.0 km. In the south-west of the station, roughly at the level of the flyover of Bundesstraße 15 , it branches off from the main line Munich – Regensburg. Immediately after the junction you will pass the grounds of the Meier-Kammermeier warehouse. This company does not have its own siding , but loads and unloads its freight wagons directly on the main line. About a kilometer further on, the route passes the hamlet of Walkenstetten, turns west and crosses the communal road to Lindach via a level crossing . After another level crossing, the line reaches the Schierling market. On the right there is an industrial area in which, for example, the company Webasto and the company Labertaler Heil- und Mineralquellen are located, on the left there is a residential area. After the level crossing at Waldstrasse, which is secured with flashing lights , the Schierling stop is reached at 3.3 miles.

There follows a long left curve that runs in an incision. In this section the route crosses under Allersdorfer Straße. At a pedestrian path secured with turnstiles, the route leaves the cut and runs in a straight line on an embankment. The Allersdorfer Bach and Bachstraße are crossed by means of an arch bridge. The Eichbühl junction is on the outskirts of Schierling . Here two tracks run parallel over a distance of around 300 meters. At distance kilometers 4.3, the siding branches off to the former main ammunition depot of the Bundeswehr . It is precisely at this height that the route crosses under the bridge of the federal highway 15n, built in 2009, over the valley of the Große Laber. Another level crossing is located here.

While the former siding of the Bundeswehr branches off sharply to the left and climbs slightly in the direction of the former ammunition depot, the route initially runs in a gentle right-hand bend and then changes to the left side of the valley on a low dam, which is broken through by several flood bridges and dirt roads. After a long left-hand bend and an approximately 800-meter-long straight, the abandoned Niederleierndorf stop is reached at km 7.2. Immediately afterwards, another level crossing, secured with flashing lights, follows.

The route now stretches over two kilometers along the northern outskirts of the road villages Niederleierndorf and Oberleierndorf. After a sharp left bend and a long right bend, which passes the route on the embankment, you have reached the Weinbergstraße level crossing, which is secured with flashing lights. Another level crossing follows after a further 600 meters on the embankment. Then the route runs, the route in a sharp left curve, an oak- covered incision and another level crossing. The route thus leaves the local area of Oberleierndorf and runs in a straight line towards Langquaid. At a distance of 9.5 km, it crosses the communal road from Langquaid to Oberleierndorf by means of a level crossing secured by flashing lights. Then the Langquaid station area begins, marked by a trapezoid board. After another left turn and the Heuweg level crossing, the line forks into two tracks that end at the former station building.
