George David Low (born February 19, 1956 in Cleveland , Ohio , USA , † March 15, 2008 in Reston , Virginia ) was an American astronaut and space manager.

He studied physical engineering at Washington and Lee University , mechanical engineering at Cornell University, and aerospace engineering at Stanford University .

From 1980, Low worked for four years at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory , where he was involved in the planning of various space probes to explore the planetary system.

In 1984 he was selected as a candidate for astronaut training. He was an astronaut on the STS-32 (January 1990), STS-43 (August 1991) and STS-57 (June 1993) flights .

1996 Low left NASA and worked at Orbital Sciences Corporation in Dulles ( Virginia ).

The Cygnus Orb-D1 space transporter launched on September 18, 2013 was named after him.

Private

Low was married and had three children. He died of colon cancer on March 15, 2008 at Reston Hospital Center in Virginia .

Low had Austrian roots. His father, George Michael Low , was born in Vienna and later emigrated to the USA, where he also worked for NASA. Between 1969 and 1976 he was Deputy Head of the Space Agency.
