Herbert Hagn (born June 9, 1927 in Munich ; † December 15, 2003 ibid) was a German paleontologist and geologist .

Life

Hagn, the son of a master precision mechanic, studied geology and palaeontology at the University of Munich after military service in World War II from 1944 and English prisoner of war, with a diploma in 1950 and a doctorate summa cum laude in 1952. The habilitation took place in 1955 through the tertiary of Monte Brione on Lake Garda , whereupon he was a private lecturer in Munich and from 1962 professor.

He initially dealt with micropaleontology ( foraminifera ) and regionally with molasses from the Tertiary (where he worked with Otto Hölzl ), flysch , limestone Alps , Helvetica on the northern edge of the Alps and in the Alpine foothills. He wrote a book about thin sections , facies and microfauna of rocks in the Bavarian Alps (1955) and later dealt with the study of ceramics for archeology in Bavaria with numerous publications. He also published on the history of geology.

He was in the German Tertiary Stratigraphy Subcommission (including Eocene - Oligocene Border 1986).

In 1998 he received the Order of Merit 1st Class of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 1997 the Bavarian Monument Protection Medal .
