Josef Deimer (2003)

Josef Deimer (born May 29, 1936 in Landshut ) is a German state and local politician of the CSU . He was Lord Mayor of Landshut for 35 years .

The graduate engineer (FH) was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament from 1966 to 1970 , a member of the Bavarian Senate between 1982 and 1999 and from January 1, 1970 to December 31, 2004, and thus initially the youngest and then the longest-serving Mayor in the Federal Republic. Since 1975 he has been chairman of the Bavarian Association of Cities , since 1994 also Deputy President of the German Association of Cities .

Live and act

Josef Deimer grew up as the youngest of five children in the Achdorf working-class district in Landshut. His father died early.

The CSU politician made a name for himself as a lateral thinker and thought leader on the basis of Christian social teaching. The immediate proximity to the Isar I and Isar II nuclear power plants strengthened his conviction: "For me it is an ethical question: we cannot deal with the preservation of plutonium for thousands of generations ." He also described the Wackersdorf reprocessing plant as unprofitable, long before the energy industry itself cut the project.

For his civil courage, he received the Munich Ludwig Thoma Medal for civil courage in public in 1989 , shortly before Thomas's national-conservative attitude, his anti-Semitic slogans and anti-socialist polemics became known, whereupon the award of the medal was discontinued in 1990. He was recognized as "a politician of the kind that everyone calls for - close to the citizen, courageous, an independent and consistent advocate of morally founded convictions."

In the CSU he was considered a rebel. The rebellious mayor and senator fought with prime ministers and ministers when it came to developing Landshut as a gem of Gothic architecture into a model town. His election results underscore his credibility as a politician. Six times he received the trust of the citizens with votes of up to 83.6 percent against several opposing candidates. For 30 years he was chairman of the Bavarian City Council. On January 1, 2005, after 35 years of service as mayor, he retired. On June 1, 2006 Josef Deimer was made an honorary citizen of the city of Landshut. Two years later, the Hofberg tunnel to calm traffic in the historic old town, which he had fought for, was renamed the Josef Deimer tunnel after him .

On Saturday, May 28, 2016, the city of Landshut hosted a ceremony in the town hall for the 80th birthday of the former mayor and invited guests. Following the greeting from Lord Mayor Hans Rampf , Prime Minister Horst Seehofer gave the celebratory speech.
