The Landshut University of Applied Sciences ( HAW or HS Landshut ) was founded in 1978 as the Landshut University of Applied Sciences . The name was expanded to include the University of Applied Sciences in 2008 , and the term Fachhochschule has not been used since 2012. However, it still has the status of a technical college . With more than 4,700 students, it is one of the larger universities in Bavaria .
Faculties and courses of study
The university currently comprises six faculties:
- Business administration
- Electrical engineering and industrial engineering
- Computer science
- mechanical engineering
- Social work
- Interdisciplinary Studies
Since 2008, the switch from diploma to bachelor and master courses has been fully implemented.
Business administration
With 820 students, business administration is the third largest faculty at the university after electrical engineering, industrial engineering and computer science. The bachelor's degree programs in Business Administration and International Business Administration / International Business with a standard study time of seven semesters as well as the Master's degree programs in International Business, Market-Oriented Management and Personnel Management with a standard study time of three semesters are offered.
In the business administration course, students choose two of the following eight areas of focus / specializations in the last two semesters:
- Controlling
- Financial management concepts
- Marketing and sales management
- Organizational concepts and human resource management
- Taxes
- business Informatics
- Procurement and logistics
- Accounting and auditing
Another focus of the faculty's competence is internationalization. The Bachelor's degree in International Business Administration (offered since the winter semester 2008/09) leads to a double degree after an obligatory stay abroad of three semesters at one of the partner universities. The partner universities are University of Cambridge (Great Britain), Griffith College ( Dublin , Ireland), Universidad de Alcalá ( Madrid , Spain), University of South Carolina Upstate ( Spartanburg , USA), University of Strasbourg (France) and Novia University of Applied Science ( Turku , Finland). This also applies to the three-semester Master’s program in International Business Administration with a double degree, which was included in the faculty's program in the 2014 summer semester.
The Master’s degree in Personnel Management is organized in cooperation with the universities of applied sciences in Munich and Augsburg , with the courses being held centrally in Munich.
Electrical engineering and industrial engineering
The Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Industrial Engineering is the largest faculty with 1,500 students and offers the bachelor's degree courses in electrical engineering and information technology, biomedical engineering, industrial engineering, international industrial engineering, automotive industry and technology, and energy economics and technology.
The International Industrial Engineering course has been offered since the 2014/2015 winter semester and comprises one to three semesters abroad, which can be completed as a practical semester in the company or at one of the faculty's partner universities. In addition, at least one English-language module is one of the compulsory courses in each semester. In addition to English, modules in a second foreign language must also be taken.
The faculty offers consecutive master’s courses in wiring system development , electrical and information technology and industrial engineering. The Bachelor in Industrial Engineering and the Master in Process Management and Resource Efficiency can be taken part-time.
Computer science
The Faculty of Computer Science has existed since 2001. Initially, only the Bachelor's degree in Computer Science was offered. The automotive informatics course, which is unique in Germany, has been offered in cooperation with the electrical engineering and mechanical engineering faculties since the 2008/2009 winter semester . A year later, the course started business computer science in collaboration with the Faculty of Management. All three courses last seven semesters, conclude with a bachelor's degree and only begin in the winter semester. Furthermore, the master’s courses in computer science and systems engineering are offered. In contrast to the rule, the former can also be started in the winter semester.
mechanical engineering
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering employs 25 professors and other teaching staff to ensure the supervision of currently around 730 students (status: winter semester 2018/2019).
The faculty offers the bachelor's degree courses in mechanical engineering, automotive and commercial vehicle technology as well as energy and lightweight engineering (to be discontinued). In addition, the master’s courses in lightweight construction and simulation (since the summer semester 2009) and automotive and commercial vehicle technology (since the summer semester 2014) are carried out. The part-time master’s degree courses in Applied Computational Mechanics as well as Industry Marketing and Technical Sales are also part of the faculty's program.
Mechanical engineering students (from winter semester 2014/2015) choose one of the following profiling directions from the fourth semester:
- General Engineering
- Energy and environmental technology
- Manufacturing engineering and production management
- Lightweight construction
In the automotive and commercial vehicle technology course, students (from winter semester 2014/2015) choose between the following areas of specialization:
- Drive technology
- Commercial vehicle technology
- Passenger car technology
Social work
In addition to the bachelor's degree in social work, the faculty has also been offering the bachelor's degree in social work in child and youth welfare since the 2008/2009 winter semester. Since the summer semester 2013, the consecutive, application-oriented master’s course “Clinical Social Work” has been offered. In the 2015/2016 winter semester, the Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting was added to the faculty's program, which was transferred to the newly opened “Interdisciplinary Studies” faculty in the 2016 summer semester.
Interdisciplinary Studies
This faculty was newly founded in the summer semester of 2016 and is the youngest faculty at the university. It comprises the bachelor's degree courses in sign language interpreting and engineering education. The modules and elective subjects of the “Studium Generale” are also located in the faculty. A certain number of these modules are compulsory in many Bachelor courses.
Central facilities
administration
On May 2, 2016, the new lecture hall and administration building celebrated the topping-out ceremony. In June 2017, part of the university administration moved into the new offices and it was officially opened on June 28th. It is now the new home of the Business Administration faculty. In January 2019, the entire administrative apparatus finally moved into the old district building, which has been rented by the university since October 2019.
Library
The library of the Landshut University of Applied Sciences is a public, scientific library. It is accessible to everyone with a place of residence in the city or in the Landshut district .
Since January 10, 2002, the university library has been open around the clock for students and staff of the university. Outside of the usual opening times, books can be borrowed using the self- booking system (student ID with integrated RFID chip required).
The university library's online services are also available to students (e.g. catalog, account services, interlibrary loan, full-text access to specialist books, scientific journals and technical standards).
University community
The Catholic and Protestant Church at the Landshut University of Applied Sciences organizes many different events for students and professors.
University sports Landshut
The University Sports Landshut is organized by the Central University Sports Munich (ZHS) of the Technical University of Munich . The students of the University of Landshut can take part in the sports activities in Landshut and the ZHS Freising and the ZHS Munich.
Further education academy
In addition to the extra-occupational courses listed above, the Continuing Education Academy (formerly the Institute for Continuing Education) also offers the attendance of labor market-relevant thematic modules from various courses as well as university certificate courses. The latter enable intensive further training without being tied to a particular course.
International Office
The International Office of the Landshut University of Applied Sciences helps foreign students to apply for a degree and supports them with advice and support. Other areas of responsibility:
- Advising German students who are planning a study or internship abroad
- Arranging scholarships and maintaining contacts with funding institutions
- Maintaining contacts with partner universities abroad and supporting new contacts
Data center
The data center of the Landshut University of Applied Sciences is responsible for the operation of the computers and printers in the various rooms and the provision of services and servers. The data center operates u. a. the service portal, a web service that z. B. User passwords can be changed or dorm connections can be registered. The service portal can also be used to access the administration IT's self-service portal, where you can register for exams, re-register for the following semester and find your exam results and certificates of enrollment. However, these functions are only available with an account and a certificate, which the data center is also responsible for issuing. In addition, the data center provides every student with access to DreamSpark Standard (non-MINT courses) or DreamSpark Premium (MINT courses) and the Microsoft portal. Various professionally relevant programs for the degree can also be obtained from the computer center.
language Center
The language center, which was founded in 2001, is a central institution and is cross-departmental, but has been part of the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies since 2016. The language courses are open to all students. Language courses are offered at different levels, also in preparation for studying or doing an internship abroad. The courses are certified according to UNIcert .

Student union
The Landshut University of Applied Sciences is assigned to the Niederbayern-Oberpfalz Student Union. Its tasks and responsibilities include:
- Operation of the canteen and cafeteria
- Operation of the student dormitory and placement of private rooms
- Accommodation exchange for arranging accommodation with private providers
- Advice on financing your studies (BAföG, child benefit, student loans, grants, etc.)
- Social counseling and psychological counseling
- Promotion of student cultural activities
- Organization of Franco-German exchange programs with the CROUS Clermont-Ferrand
The mandatory semester fee for all students is currently 72 € (including semester ticket) and must be transferred after enrollment or when re-registering for the following semester (status: summer semester 2015).
In its meeting on July 4, 2018, the budget committee in the state parliament approved the construction of the new canteen at the Landshut University of Applied Sciences with a planned total cost of 13.6 million euros. Originally an expansion and refurbishment of the cafeteria was planned, but this subsequently turned out to be ineffective. Therefore, a new building was planned that meets today's requirements in terms of size and equipment. Construction of the new cafeteria is scheduled to start in autumn 2019.
Student dormitories
In January 2019 there were nine student housing complexes in Landshut. Two of them opened in 2017. All of the residential complexes together offer apartments for around 1,300 students. You are in the city center, between the city center and the university or in the immediate vicinity of the university. This means that a quarter of the students have a dormitory space available.
CampusNest
Since April 2016, 48 kindergarten and 28 crèche places have been available to the children of students and university members in the CampusNest.

In the 2017/2018 winter semester there were 21 Bachelor and 15 Master’s courses. Currently (2018) the university has 317 employees: 115 professors, 47 research assistants and 155 employees in the technical and administrative area.
4,900 students were enrolled in the 2018/2019 winter semester. That was 121 fewer students than in the 2017/2018 winter semester. The number of students fell for the third time in a row in ten years. The number of students peaked at 5,480 in the 2015/2016 winter semester.
