Johann Georg Müller (Bishop)
Johann Georg Müller (born October 15, 1798 in Koblenz , † January 19, 1870 in Münster ) was a German theologian and Roman Catholic bishop .
life and work
Müller came from a family of lawyers and, after graduating from high school, studied Catholic theology , history and oriental languages at the seminary in Trier and the universities of Würzburg and Bonn from 1817 to 1821 .
After being ordained a priest in Cologne in 1821 , he was initially chaplain to Josef von Hommer in Ehrenbreitstein . In 1825 Müller received an honorary doctorate from the theological faculty of the University of Vienna . In 1826 he went to Vienna, Berlin and Munich for further studies , where he received his doctorate in 1827 . From 1830 he was professor for church history and canon law at the seminary in Trier. In 1836 he became cathedral capitular and cathedral preacher , in 1842 vicar general and in 1844 auxiliary bishop in Trier and titular bishop of Thaumacus . The bishop of Trier, Wilhelm Arnoldi , gave him his episcopal ordination on January 12, 1845; Co- consecrator was the Apostolic Vicar of the North, Bishop Johann Theodor Laurent . From 1847 he was finally Bishop of Münster . There he founded the Konvikt Collegium Ludgerianum and arranged the acquisition of the music library of Fortunato Santini . He was also interested in art and monument preservation , including a. As Vicar General in Trier, he arranged for the collection of works of art in church property, and he himself published works on art history. In Münster Cathedral he prevented the rood screen from being demolished , although it was removed after his death.
From May 18, 1848 to August 7, 1848, he was a non-attached member of the Frankfurt National Assembly as a representative of the 20th constituency of the province of Westphalia (Münster) .
