Carl Weddige

Carl Friedrich Joseph Weddige (born September 18, 1815 in Rheine ; † March 26, 1862 in Amsterdam ) was a German-Dutch portrait and genre painter and lithographer from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Weddige, son of entrepreneur Joseph Anton Johann Andreas Weddige (* 1780 in Lippborg ) and his wife Maria "Gabriele" Christine Theodora van Coeverden (* 1788 in Rheine) grew up in Rheine and attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1832 to 1837 . There were Karl Schaffer , Josef Winter Gerst and Karl Ferdinand Sohn his teachers. Due to illness, he left the Düsseldorf Academy in the 1st quarter of 1837. In 1838 he traveled to the Netherlands, for whose masters of the 17th century he had a particular preference. After visiting Paris , he settled in Amsterdam in 1842. There he married Esther Nunes Vaz (1819–1876), the daughter of Isaac Jacob Nunes Vaz (1793–1868) and his wife Debora Henriques de la Fuente (1797–1869). The couple had two sons, Louis Raphael Weddige (1855–1929, later diamond cutter and photographer) and Charles André Weddige.

Weddige is one of the well-known Rheiner artists whose works are exhibited in the Falkenhof Museum in Rheine.
