Gerd Geismann

Gerd Geismann (born January 5, 1945 in Sulzbach-Rosenberg ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 1988 to 2012 he was mayor of Sulzbach-Rosenberg.

Life

Geismann began his apprenticeship with the Sulzbach-Rosenberg city administration in August 1961 at the age of sixteen. In 1967 he became a city inspector and in 1981 he became a senior official. As early as 1969, the then mayor Hans Göth appointed him deputy head of the office, and since 1980 he has headed the office himself. Geismann became first mayor of Sulzbach-Rosenberg on March 10, 1988 . He did not run for the mayoral election on January 15, 2012. In March 2014 he was elected as a city council member of Sulzbach-Rosenberg and sworn in in May 2014. He declared that he wanted to get more involved in cultural and youth work.

Work as mayor

During Geismann's tenure, the structural change following the final shutdown of the Maxhütte steelworks in 2002 was managed by extensive settlement of commercial companies . In 2012 the unemployment rate in Sulzbach-Rosenberg was only four percent. On his initiative, Sulzbach-Rosenberg became the location of the Bavarian riot police and the University of Applied Sciences for Public Administration and Justice in Bavaria . The former ATZ research institute, which emerged from part of the Maxhütte, is now part of the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT .

The historic old town was renovated and revitalized during Geismann's tenure. Geismann ensured that the cultural heritage of the former royal seat was secured and used for external impact. The Knorr-von-Rosenroth Festival , the former synagogue , which was renovated as a meeting place, and the historical printing house JE v. Seidel struck the bow from the Sulzbacher Musenhof of Duke Christian August with his religious tolerance for the late enlightenment.

Honors

He has been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon and was a member of the Presidium of the Bavarian City Council . From 2005 to 2011 he was second deputy chairman of the European Metropolitan Region of Nuremberg . On October 14, 2015 he was awarded the Bavarian Order of Merit for his services to the restructuring of the city after the end of the Maxhütte, the old town renovation and the successful integration of the resettlers .
