House Milchgasse 4 in Kempten

The Milchgasse 4 building in Kempten (Allgäu) , a town in Bavaria , was built in 1730. The house is a protected monument .

description

The two-storey gable building with a half-timbered upper storey and massive ground floor was originally built for two apartments. In the 18th century there was an expansion to four residential units due to a lack of living space. In the 19th century the attic was set up for an apartment. After extensive renovation work in the 2000s, there was again one apartment on each floor. The beamed ceilings and most of the old wooden floors have been preserved.

In 2006 the building was threatened with demolition due to a lack of entry in the list of monuments. The renovation of the ruinous house by the architect Herrmann Hagspiel was awarded the Monument Protection Medal of the Free State of Bavaria in 2010 . During the renovation, the plaster was also removed, revealing the framework. Damp walls were drained, foundations were underpinned and unsafe parts of the wooden structure were renewed. The extension from the 1940s was canceled.

The cost of renovating and redesigning the building was around 520,000 euros. The measure was subsidized with 120,000 euros from the compensation fund. The client as an architect and trained bricklayer, like the whole family, performed their own work worth around 55,000 euros as well as the entire planning work.
