history
In 1632 Gustav Adolf had an outer ring of fortifications built around the imperial city of Nuremberg against the advancing troops of Wallenstein . To the west of Nuremberg, as part of these fortifications, the Bärenschanze was built as a star-shaped artillery bastion, which existed until around 1820. After the end of the Thirty Years' War, the imperial city of Nuremberg expanded the complex into a barracks, which was used as a military hospital for French soldiers during the coalition wars (1792 to 1815). Today only the commandant's house from 1721 in Bärenschanzstrasse 8b, which is occupied by a loft apartment .
In 1796 the area around the Bärenschanze was incorporated into Prussia , in 1806 into Bavaria and on October 1, 1825, as part of the truce in Nuremberg .
The Old Jewish Cemetery has existed here since 1864 and was used until 1922.
The Nuremberg Palace of Justice with the adjoining cell prison is located in the north-west of District 22. This is where the Nuremberg trials took place from 1945 to 1949 after the Second World War .
