East Timor (officially Timor-Leste ) declared independence on May 20, 2002 after three years of administration by the United Nations . The country was then recognized by the Federal Republic of Germany as a sovereign state. Both countries established diplomatic relations.

Germany does not have its own embassy in Dili , the capital of East Timor. The German ambassador to Indonesia is double accredited for the country . The Embassy of Portugal will take care of local German citizens . East Timor has an honorary consulate in Berlin .
