Paul Baron von Maltzahn

Paul Hermann Freiherr von Maltzahn (born January 18, 1945 in Demmin ; † May 21, 2018 in Boldevitz ) was a German diplomat .

Life

Paul Freiherr von Maltzahn ( gender number 1667) came from the "Haus Schossow" of the Mecklenburg and Pomeranian noble family of the von Maltza (h) n . After studying law , history and Arabic at the universities of Heidelberg , Munich and Hamburg , he completed a degree at the " Institut d'études politiques " in Paris . He had been a member of the Corps Vandalo-Guestphalia Heidelberg since 1964.

After joining the Foreign Service in 1970, he worked at the embassy in Ireland (as attaché), at the embassy in Lebanon (as press officer) and at the embassy in France (as cultural officer). From 1980 to 1984 he was permanent representative of the ambassador to Syria , before he was then deputy head of a department in the Department for Foreign Cultural and Educational Policy (Department 6) of the Foreign Office in Bonn until 1988 . In 1989 Paul von Maltzahn became permanent representative of the ambassador in Algeria and then from 1991 to 1996 head of the department for organization in the central department of the Federal Foreign Office.

He then became an envoy at the embassy in London . Maltzahn was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Egypt from 2000 to July 2003 . His successor there was Martin Kobler , while von Maltzahn was appointed Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Iran in July 2003 .

In February 2004, the Iranian newspaper Kejhan announced that the ambassador was about to be recalled. The dismissal is planned to prevent expulsion by the Iranian authorities. Vice-President Mohammed Ali Abtahi denied the newspaper report the next day.

In August 2006 Paul Freiherr von Maltzahn was replaced by Herbert Honsowitz in Tehran. From September 2006 to September 2009 von Maltzahn was the German ambassador in Jakarta for Indonesia and East Timor . From mid-September 2009 to summer 2010 Paul von Maltzahn was head of the German representation in Baghdad ( Iraq ).

Since September 1, 2010, he has been managing director of the German Society for Foreign Policy (DGAP) until he was replaced by Harald Kindermann in September 2014 .
