Seyyed Mohammed Ali Abtahi ( listen ? / I PersianAudio file / audio sample محمدعلی ابطحی, DMG Muḥammad-ʿAlī Abṭaḥī ; * January 27, 1958 in Mashhad ) is a Shiite clergyman with the religious title Hodschatoleslam . He was Vice President of Iran from July 10, 1997 to October 12, 2004 .

Life

Mohammed Ali Abtahi was President of Iranian Broadcasting and, under the Mohammad Chātami government, first Vice-President of Iran, first as Deputy President, then Vice-President for Parliamentary Affairs in the second legislative term. Abtahi is a member of the Iranian party association of the fighting clergy and sees himself as a civil rights activist. Abtahi became known as the “blogging mullah” who, since his resignation in 2004, “has been writing down insider stories from the corridors of power”.

In the Iranian presidential elections in 2009 , Abtahi acted as advisor to the candidate Mehdi Karroubi and was arrested after the elections, on June 14th or June 16th, because, according to the government of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he was one of the main "masterminds" of the unrest . In a video, Abtahi is said to have tearfully declared that he “incited people and students and stirred up unrest”.

process

The trial of Abtahi began on August 1, 2009. According to the official IRNA news agency and the semi-official FARS news agency, the visibly exhausted Mohammed Ali Abtahi rejected the allegations of election fraud against Ahmadinejad. According to Fars, Abtahi told the Revolutionary Court that it was a "lie" to speak of fraud in connection with the June 12 presidential election. This was intended to trigger unrest in Iran "so that Iran would become like Afghanistan or Iraq". Ali Schirasi reports on his blog that Abtahi's wife stated that her husband had been given pills while in custody, which led to his forgetting many things. Schirasi describes this as an indication of the use of Rohypnol against the prisoners.
