history

The Union of Warring Clergy was founded in 1988 after the Islamic Republican Party fell apart. It is a split from the Association of the Warring Clergy , which was founded by several close confidants of Ayatollah Khomeini .

In its beginnings it was a rather left-wing populist party and advocated the export of the Islamic Revolution of Iran to other countries as well as the state monopoly over the economy . The advocacy of democracy and freedom of expression played a minor role for a long time until the party turned to a reform course. After Mehdi Karroubi resigned as General Secretary in August 2005, the party temporarily had no successor until Mohammed Musavi Choeiniha took over the position several months later . A senior official in the organization is Mohammad Chātami , chairman of the party's central council and former Iranian president.
