Mehdi Karroubi
Mehdi Karroubi (مهدی کروبی Mehdi Karrubi ; * September 26, 1937 in Aligudarz in Lorestan ) is an Iranian politician and Shiite cleric with the religious title Hodschatoleslam val Muslim.
Life
Karroubi was President of the Iranian Parliament (Majlis-e Shora-ye Eslamii) from 1989 to 1996 and from 2000 to 2004 and a candidate in the Iranian presidential elections in 2005 . In the first ballot he received 17.24% of the vote.
After losing the presidential election, Karroubi founded the Etemad-e Melli (National Trust) party. According to Bahman Nirumand , the founding of the party served "to win more trust among the right-wing forces through severe criticism of the reformers" .
Karroubi is considered a moderate cleric who criticized Mahmoud Ahmadineschād's leadership style, but does not question the ruling system of the Islamic Republic. In an interview in February 2008 he said: "I am a member of the [Islamic] system, the child of the system and my fate is closely linked to the system." In a speech on March 9, 2008, Karroubi emphasized: "The cause of ours The problem is not whether we accept the suspension (of uranium enrichment) or not [...] Incendiary speeches and positions have caused many problems for Iran [...] we can insist on our rights without provocative speeches. "
With regard to foreign policy, Karroubi remarked in an interview with Tagesspiegel: “The Holocaust took place. There was the murder. Should we defend Adolf Hitler by denying the Holocaust? "
Mehdi Karroubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi belong to the so-called “green movement” in Iran. On February 14, 2011, both called for nationwide solidarity demonstrations with the Tunisian and Egyptian people. Since February 24, 2011, they and their wives ( Fatemeh Karroubi and Zahra Rahnaward ) have been under house arrest.
