Gholam Ali Haddad-Adel ( Persian غلامعلی حداد عادل; * 1945 in Tehran ) is an Iranian politician and was speaker of the Iranian parliament from June 6, 2004 to May 26, 2008, or was elected President of Parliament with 226 of the 259 members present . He is also a member of the Security Council and the Arbitration Council .

Life

Haddad-Adel was born the son of a wealthy tea merchant, received his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Tehran before the revolution and completed a master's degree in physics. He studied Islamic philosophy under Morteza Motahhari , who was a companion of the revolutionary leader Ruhollah Khomeinis , but deviated from his teaching on questions of the form of rule. At the same time, Haddad-Adel is regarded as a critic of Ali Shariati's school of thought . At the University of Tehran, he teaches philosophy of the West and has translated the works of Immanuel Kant into Persian. He is a member of the High Council of Science and Education and has been director of the Academy of Persian Language and Literature since 1991 .

He is the leader of the political party Coalition of Cultivators of Islamic Iran , which is considered pragmatic conservative. In his speeches he quotes both the Koran and Kant. In 2004, he pleaded for a free market economy and a cautious detente with the United States . He called for the ban on satellite dishes in Iran to be lifted. “Our task is to correct the crooked image of the Islamic Republic in the West.” He has direct access to the revolutionary leader through his daughter, who is married to the son Seyyed Ali Chameneis , Mojtaba.

Current policy

Regarding the planned elevation of the British-Indian author Salman Rushdie to the knighthood, Haddad-Adel has issued a sharp warning to the British Queen:

The 80-year-old Elizabeth II had to put up with the question of why she gave the title "Sir" to a person who had insulted one and a half billion Muslims.
Salman Rushdie was sentenced to death by Imam Khomeini's historical fatwa and the award of titles cannot bring this corpse back to life.

According to Bahman Nirumand , the reason for being voted out of parliament in May 2008 was to have changed direction too late . His tactic was to “always follow the majority of the Conservatives. At first he had unconditionally supported the Ahmadine Shad government. But after the criticism of the president grew, he tried to change direction. ” When asked by a journalist whether the newly elected parliament would support the government, Haddad-Adel replied: “ I don't think so. ”

In 2010, Haddad-Adel took over the chairmanship of the World Philosophy Day awarded by UNESCO to the Islamic Republic of Iran . The organizer in Tehran was the Academy for World Wisdom and Philosophy located there . The German philosopher Otfried Höffe then canceled his participation in November because he feared that the event would become a “propaganda event” for President Mahmud Ahmadineschād .

In February 2012, Haddad-Adel declared the parties that were not allowed in the Iranian parliamentary elections in March to be under the control of foreign powers and to be pro-Western . He himself is said to have been on several lists of approved parties as an outside candidate .

Haddad-Adel was traded as a possible successor to Mahmoud Ahmadineschād in the office of president.

At the end of May 2012, Haddad-Adel lost his re-election as parliamentary president against Ahmadineschād critic Ali Larijani with 100 votes to 173.
