Michael Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg (born July 2, 1955 ) is a German diplomat and has been Ambassador to Iran since July 2013 . From 2016 to 2018 he was ambassador to Indonesia and East Timor . Since September 2018 he has been ambassador to the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in Geneva .

Life

The diplomat comes from the noble family of Barons von Ungern-Sternberg , graduated from high school with a degree in law and passed the second state examination in 1981 .

In 1982 he joined the Foreign Service and completed his training as an attaché by 1984 . After a subsequent assignment as a consultant for EC affairs at the Foreign Office in Bonn , he was second secretary at the embassy in Morocco between 1986 and 1989 and then deputy head of the consulate general in Leningrad .

In 1992, Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg became Counselor at the Permanent Representation of the Federal Republic of Germany to the European Union in Brussels , before he was a consultant for EU affairs in the Foreign Office and the Bundestag between 1995 and 1998 . After a subsequent assignment from 1998 to 2002 as head of division for EU expansion in the Foreign Office, he was head of the political department at the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations in New York City between 2002 and 2006 and then for a Year Deputy Head of the Permanent Mission of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations in New York City.

After his return, Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg was Commissioner for the United Nations at the Foreign Office in Berlin from 2007 to 2009 and then became Head of the Department for the United Nations and Global Issues at the Foreign Office in December 2009.

In July 2013, Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg became Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Iran and thus the successor to the retired Bernd Erbel . In November 2013, he expressed his hope for a nuclear deal with Iran during talks in Geneva .

From September 2016 to August 2018 Freiherr von Ungern-Sternberg was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Indonesia and East Timor . He then moved to the Permanent Mission of Germany to the United Nations in Geneva as ambassador .
