Georg Witschel

Georg Witschel (born May 10, 1954 in Neumünster ) is a German diplomat . He was the German ambassador to Brazil from September 2016 to June 2020 .

biography

After graduating from high school in 1973 in Nuremberg and completing his basic military service in the armed forces , he studied law at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg between 1975 and 1982 , where he passed his first and second state examinations. After participating in several international courses took place there his doctorate to Dr. iur. with a dissertation in international law .

In 1983 he joined the diplomatic service and after completing his attachment training in 1985 he was employed as a consultant in the Foreign Policy Department of the Federal Chancellery in Bonn and from 1986 to 1989 as a consultant in the Department of International Law in the Foreign Office . He then served as Counselor Political Advisor at the Embassy in Israel and from 1992 to 1995 Permanent Representative of the Ambassador and Head of the Economic Department at the Embassy in Slovenia .

After his return to Germany, he was Deputy Head of the Personnel Department for the higher service at the headquarters of the Federal Foreign Ministry and then from 1998 to 2001 Deputy Head of the Political Department and legal advisor to the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City .

In 2001 he returned to Germany and was Head of Division for Fundamental Issues of the United Nations, United Nations Security Council and Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding Measures (Division GF 01) of the Federal Foreign Office. Between 2002 and 2006 he was Federal Government Commissioner for International Counter-Terrorism and Prevention (GF-T) in the Foreign Ministry's Department for Global Issues, United Nations, Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid (GF Department).

Between 2006 and 2009 Witschel was head of the legal department of the Federal Foreign Office and as such at the same time adviser to the federal government on questions of international law.

In August 2009 he replaced Matthias Martin Höpfner as Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Canada . In 2012 he moved to Jakarta as ambassador to Indonesia . As such, he was also accredited as an ambassador for East Timor . In September 2016 he moved to Brasilia as ambassador to Brazil . He stayed in this post until June 2020

Witschel is the author of several publications on questions of international law, disarmament, preventing and combating terrorism, and economic issues.

Georg Witschel is married and has one daughter.
