Matthias Höpfner (diplomat)

Matthias Martin Höpfner (born December 18, 1953 in Potsdam ) is a German diplomat . He was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Canada from 2006 to 2009 , to Bulgaria from 2009 to 2014 and to Ireland from 2014 to 2017 .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1972, Höpfner studied law until 1977 and worked from 1979 to 1981 as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg . He then worked as a lawyer there until 1987 .

After joining the Foreign Service in 1987, he was employed in the Foreign Office and at the Embassy in Jakarta . From 1995 to 1997 he was Permanent Representative of the Ambassador to Tripoli . This was followed by several posts in the Foreign Office as head of a work unit (1997 to 1998) and as head of the parliamentary department (1998 to 2002). In addition, he was deputy head of the economic department from 2002 to 2006.

In 2006 he succeeded Christian Paul's ambassador in Canada and in 2009 he became ambassador to Bulgaria . From 2014 to 2017 he represented the Federal Republic as ambassador in Dublin .

Höpfner is a member of the Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen party .
